A big thank you to everyone who participated, and of course a hearty congratulations to our top finishers. In 1st place, we have "iPeg" (up from 5th place in last season). 2nd place is "TC2" (up from 6th) and in 3rd we find "dkatz1877" who is new to the Competitive Matchmaking Leaderboard this season, although active for many years in the game. If you were someone who didn't place this season, keep trying and I'm sure you will find your winning streak! Of course, we always recommend reading through the cribbage strategy tips and the many related blog posts to sharpen up.
I asked "iPeg" (aka Kelly Holt from Wisconsin, USA) to share some perspective on the great game of cribbage. If you want to earn a top spot yourself, it would be hard to disagree with this advice:
"People who are smarter and more eloquent than I have written entire books on detailed cribbage strategies, so I won’t begin to try to cover many of them, but I have a few guidelines that have helped me to win more often. One is to always discard and play your hand based upon statistics, and not hunches. Another is to play the best players, from which you will learn the most. A third is to self-critique your own play, and never stop learning and adjusting. After playing for over twenty five years, I’ve changed the way I lead from certain hands in just the last year or two. And finally, read those cribbage books!"
As with last season, everyone who finished the season in the Top 50 ("Recent" list, not "All Time"), have been awarded both a special in-game "board peg" as well as Cribbage Pro Gold that can be used in the Cribbage Pro Contests system and then redeemed for cold hard cash (awards must be used at least once in a Contest to be cashed out to USDC, see the full terms and conditions for details). The top finisher, iPeg, is awarded the "crown" board peg, and all others in the Top 50 are awarded a "star" board peg. These pegs are shown to everyone when playing in online multiplayer games, so if you see your opponent has one of them you can know that they have earned it by finishing in the Top 50 in competitive play. The Cribbage Pro Gold awards are as follows (not cumulative):
- 2 Gold for Top 50
- 4 Gold for Top 25
- 10 Gold for Top 10
- 20 Gold for 3rd Place
- 30 Gold for 2nd Place
- 50 Gold for 1st Place
New Season 3
Season 2 History:
Qualifying rounds, placement matches, opponent is losing, they quit and you're not given credit for the win. How is this right?ReplyDelete
Hi, if someone disconnects, you will get the win (and them a loss). However, incomplete matches will not count towards placement matches as a means of preventing some forms of attempts to manipulate the system.Delete
But isn’t disconnecting a way of manipulating things if it doesn’t count against you for rankingDelete
Hi Phil, it does absolutely count against someone for their CR/ranking if they disconnect or quit. It just does not count as one of your matches for placement. That makes it a little complicated to explain in detail, but without diving through all of the technical details and formulas, it really is easiest to just consider the placement matches as a minimum number of games to count before you show up in the Leaderboard. The CR and ranking formulas account for all of this.Delete
Thank you so much, wonderful format and tons of fun! Only two small suggestions: 10 seconds per move is much too long and there are still many people in competitive that take all 10 seconds every time - something like 3 seconds per move plus 60 seconds of floating time is much more standard (websites like PlayOK do this) and would be more effective. As currently constituted, matches can vary from under five minutes to over half an hour, and it’s tough to determine how much time to block off for a match. Additionally, it would be great to see someone’s tier ranking (bronze/silver/gold/platinum/diamond/master/grandmaster) while playing them. Thanks again and great work!!ReplyDelete
Hi, we are considering some timing changes in the future, and appreciate your suggestions. The player rankings are based solely on the CR which is shown, but also the border image around your opponent's avatar will indicate their CR level too.Delete
Amazing fun game. Could you, please, move the NOTICE in the middle of the screen, not on top of my cards. On the cell phone, whe I received a NOTICE, on tol of my cards, which I can't see anymore, takes 8 to 9 seconds to disappear, and then only 2-3 seconds left to pick my cards. Sometime I will get a penalty warning for this situation.ReplyDelete
Hi, send us a screenshot of what you are seeing exactly to support@FullerSystems.com and include the make and model of your device. If it is something we can improve for you, we will try to get it in our next update.Delete
Hi,can you explain the scoring,I have won 6 and lost 1 yet another player has won 1 and lost 8 yet is ahead of me,thanksReplyDelete
Check the original blog post announcing Competitive Matchmaking for a quick run through and links off to similar systems with more details if you are interested. It is not about wins versus losses, but ranking and confidence factors. It is a complex system, but it has proven to work pretty well so far.Delete
Phoney as FReplyDelete
No way playing real crib will half of this happen
I’ve played for over 30 years with real cards whats in it for you? Who would put this time and effort into something if you had nothing to gain?
Hi, we make money off of the advertising in the game. This is what allows us to keep improving the game and support it. It is my full time job. That is what I get out of it - that is what I have "to gain". That, and this game was created out of the pure love of the game. We have discussed the fairness and random shuffle of the game extensively, so I won't try to do the same again in the comments section here.Delete
RedBoat1- 3 matches played. Current status shows 2. Match played against gaber1234 winning 2nd game and gaber1234 disconnects before final hand. Game does not show in results.ReplyDelete
Hi, as mentioned above in other questions, incomplete matches will not count towards the 5 placement matches, but do count towards your CR/ranking.Delete
This game is so predictableReplyDelete
I play it to prove a point once again phoney as F**k I don’t care what you think but it’s the truth
Who do you have in your pocket with lame tips not much can be done if continually dealt 19 hands nor to mention the crib
Hi again, as stated in our comments policy, please keep all comments "clean and appropriate, and only post if it moves the conversation forward". Continuing to simply push your belief that the game is designed to cheat you somehow, is not following that policy and will result in your comments being deleted. If you are not having fun in the game, which is what games are for, then this game is not for you.Delete
Should do a tournament with only manual counting and muggins points, tooooo boring with auto counting which makes the game boring!ReplyDelete
10 rounds a week doesn't sound bad but like another person mentioned one round could be 30 minutes and 5 hours spent on cribbage is a bit much. Can the rankings still be fair with a lower minimum game amount? Feels more like trying to get eyes on ads instead of a fair play necessity.ReplyDelete
Hi, as mentioned in response to that other comment about turn time limits, we definitely are considering some timing alternatives in future seasons to help make that a bit more predictable. With respect to the 10 games requirement, it was done based on both player feedback/request and analyzing the outcomes of past seasons. Yes, we make money when more people play and view the advertising (although most who play multiplayer have purchased to remove the ads, and so there is no difference there). However, when we first ran our beta testing season, and the very first season of Competitive Matchmaking, we required just 2 games per week. We wanted to have some limit in place to encourage play, as without that people would rise to the top and never play again. In studying the results of those first seasons, it was clear that 2 was nowhere near enough to accurately rank players. Based on a lot of requests from the community, last season we went with 10 as the new minimum and saw a very significant improvement. That is why we have decided to keep it that way for this season 3 as well. Hopefully with some time limit improvements in the future, this format will work even better. We are always looking for ways to improve the game for everyone, and that 10 minimum is not set in stone, so I do very much appreciate your feedback.Delete
Appreciate your response. And I'm glad your open to feedback and improvement.Delete
This comment has been removed by the author.ReplyDelete
Hi, correct, as mentioned above in other comments when someone disconnects it will still penalize them and their CR, and you will still gain CR towards your placement, but it does not count towards the 5 matches requirement to appear in the Leaderboard.Delete
Enjoying the seasons.. A couple of comments..ReplyDelete
1. The wins and games stats for the season are showing correctly (ie the season 3 stats) but the best winning streak is across all seasons. Can it be corrected to be season 3 best winning streak only?
Hi, thanks for the suggestion. Today the winning streak information is tracked by game type only, so just classic and competitive for multiplayer games. We could of course just reset it every season, but since this season is already underway, we will keep it as is for now. Over the next days/weeks, that number will ultimately reflect the current season by the simple fact that you can't play in any other season.Delete
And comment 2...ReplyDelete
It would add more interest if there were intermediate 'prizes'.. Eg a monthly 'most improved score' or 'most wins'
Not all of us are going to get into the top 50 so i would be nice to give regular recognition for others players doing well...
Hi, thanks for this suggestion as well. There are definitely a lot more players than just the top 50, so I agree it would be fun to have some other things that more people could more easily achieve.Delete
Season 3 ...not feeling the love this time around. Terrible qualifying 5 matches leaves me at the bottom. After reaching top 100 in round 2 it feels like I’m never going to get anywhere near the top...ReplyDelete
Hi, this season has had a lot of activity here early on, with a lot of players joining in competitive play that have not before. This is likely related to the holiday period. Know that the rating system is designed to account for some early poor performance and let you climb your way back up. Early on, the system has low confidence in all player rankings, and it grows slowly over time. It is best to play early in the season against others who also have that low confidence factor, as it means the impact of a loss is less. Starting out low can be a little demoralizing for sure, but if you continue to play and can improve on winning, you should be able to recover. Just keep in mind that the mix of players you are playing against has likely grown and so as the total pool of players has grown it will be harder and harder to get the top positions.Delete
It happens. I came out of qualifying games with 20% win ratio.. And now a week later i'm at 66% win ratio.Delete
Id love to be top 100..best ive managed was 194th for a day before i fell back again...
My game won't improve until I improve my discards. Over the last two sessions I have typically been at about the middle of the pack. Suggestions by you and players to read up on statistics is certainly valid but... my learning is best at the time of my action. If it's at all possible, it would be fun and informative to have the ability to "dissect" the previous game with a program that informs alternative actions that would have been better discards. Another option could be to play a program that allows one to compare discard options. I'm rambling a bit thinking about how to interactively improve my game. Thanks for doing what you do.ReplyDelete
Hi, thanks for offering your thoughts and suggestions. These are things we have definitely considered some options around adding to the game in some way. We have not yet found a "perfect" solution to it, but it is on the list to do.Delete
Phil15two, send a friend request on the app. We can play some games and critique after or even during games. iPegDelete
Terrible game, sorry. Miracle hands happen WAY too often.. I have lost something like 15 or so games in a row.. almost impossibleReplyDelete
Hi, we have worked very hard to keep the game fair and honest in every respect and it is always using a true random shuffle. We have covered that extensively in the past (game Help/FAQ and several blog posts that include published audits). Cribbage remains a game of skill, as such its not impossible to lose several games in a row. The audits done to show the fairness and random shuffle do not focus on the win rate of some particular player, but on an analysis of the shuffle and cards themselves.Delete
I hear you players who get discouraged. Me too. Started this season at the bottom, after finishing top 100 in match play. Negative win rate is humbling, and looking at the top 50 with guys with incredible win rates is more discouraging. But I’m starting to believe I can still learn to be a better player. I’m hanging in although I’ve considered jumping ship!ReplyDelete
There are many subtleties in cribbage that take years to learn. Learning them can make the difference between winning 50 games out of 100 and 58 games out of 100, which takes you from average to elite. Study the game!Delete
This game is phoneyReplyDelete
And why is it that a person loses points after a loss?
Hockey and football and every other game do not lose points for a loss so why is there a penalty for losing?
This is fixed
This is a Competitive Ranking system. The CR goes down (you lose points) when you lose, because your ranking changes (lowers). Professional sports have ranking, and that is what this is. In this case you get to see more of the raw data and the numbers that show the ranking. The game is not "fixed" against you in some way. It is using truly random shuffles as we have explained extensively, and even offered to let anyone view the game code itself to prove it unequivocally.Delete
I'll always maintain this app is a contrived game with contrived hands dealt for a purpose. Too many patterns and predictable results. For patterns, how many 4 of a kinds can be dealt before it becomes obvious its preprogrammed. It peaked when with 3 deals i was dealt 4 nines twice. That has astronomical implications if its random blind luck. For patterns, i looked at your link for average points for combination of cards thrown into the crib. 10-K is the best to throw to opponents. But too often i did that and a 5 was cut and opponent through faces for 10 or more points. I'm writing this because just now i was dealt a 4-5-6-7-10-K. No brainer to keep the runs, but sensing the pattern of a 5 cut for the obvious throw, i threw the 7-K and of course a 5 was cut. And opponent threw a K in there so they were limited this time to 6. A lot more but not bothering to elaborate on them. Your random card generator has some bugs to fix. Btw... i've been on the positive side for so many "random" events that i have to chuckle.ReplyDelete
So, there are actually ways to prove randomness with data analysis. We have done this in multiple blog posts on the topic, and we have even gone much further by offering to let anyone view the code itself. Random doesn't mean that it feels exactly like your real life shuffle, partly because a real life shuffle is often times not fully randomized. What analysis would you like to see done beyond what we have already shared?Delete
I totally agree with you ballbuster I’ve complained about the the same thingDelete
Predictable and phoney I just keep playing it to prove a point
BallBuster and Me to know how, you are full of it! It’s real easy to whine and complain about the cards, but you have absolutely no proof that they are not random. Maybe you can spend some time trying to improve your game instead.Delete
Nice constructive response Sawyer. Yet your response is still there and BB is gone.Delete
After playing for 40 years or more, I've tried everything to "improve" my game.
Yet this app has some crazy coincidences as far as card play is concerned.
Maybe you should try and listen instead of reacting to legitimate concerns.
Dad, sorry I lost my patience. One thing I’ve done to check the randomness of the cards is to add up the number of 28 hands and 29 hands for players on the app with hundreds of thousands of games played. The actual number of 28 and 29 hands are extremely close to what would be predicted based upon the odds. Live cribbage play has crazy coincidences too. My best start to a game came in live play, with a 24 hand, followed immediately by a 28 hand. One player in a live tournament was dealt two 29 hands in the same day! A good question is: Why would the app purposely deal cards in a non-random fashion? There is no incentive to do so. Every cribbage player wants the cards to be fair. If it could be proven that CribbagePro wasn’t fair, it would become a farce, not to mention potential lawsuits from players who play for cash on the app. As for your game, I would be willing to play some games and compare notes regarding strategy. For example, do you subscribe to the 26 theory? If not, you still have things to learn.Delete
To clarify, the "BB response" that is gone below was simply because it was clearly an accidental double post identical to the first. We don't just delete comments because they are negative. That said, let's all keep things on topic and as friendly as possible.Delete
Sawyer, perhaps you missed my point and falsely added i need to improve my play add solve my problems. My observation of non randomness was based on getting dealt four 9s in 2 out of 3 hands. Getting dealt a 4 of a kind is highly improbable but certainly possible as I've been dealt that here and there throughout the years. But twice in 2 hands with the same cards is astronomically unlikely. Simple statistical probabilities would bear that fact out. But no where in my original post did i whine I'm being treated unfair. In fact. I was the recipient of those 12 points handed. And i closed by saying how I've been helped by the improbable. Please read what i said and comment on that and not personal attacks. Do the math on drawing those 2 identical four of a kind in 1 game is and see if it should happen in a lifetime...Delete
BallBuster, we are always happy to share detailed card shuffle data with anyone who wants to do true mathematical analysis on the random shuffle (just contact us to get started). Similarly, we would like to look at the incident you specifically report here and do our own analysis on it. Please contact us with the date & time (include time zone) this happened as best you can remember it so we can locate it in the server game logs.Delete
So you see that big hands go both ways. You are frustrated with the times YOU were screwed. It is absolutely impossible to replicate a deck of cards after a lazy shuffle. No app can, and I'm not sure any program ever will. I'm sitting at 57% wins and #51 in competitive because I stick with it and keep playing and throwing what I think are the correct cards based on MY position on the board. I'm SURE I make plenty of mistakes, but I'm 38 years old, so maybe I should. When the opponent's impossible luck beats me, I almost break my phone, but I move on. You should do the same. Or just break your phone.Delete

Hey sawyer if you’re so great let’s play and compare hands it not rocket science and playing cards is luck not skill I don’t care what hands are dealtReplyDelete
Sounds great! Send a friend request on the app if you haven’t already and let me know it’s you. I get friend requests off and on and want to make sure we can connect. ThanksDelete
Sorry, my username is iPeg. What is yours?Delete
So now, whenever somebody is losing, they just disconnect. They apparently do not receive the L, and I sure as _____ am not getting the W.ReplyDelete
This needs to be addressed.
Hi, if someone disconnects during a match, they should absolutely get a loss and you the win. If you have an example where that doesn't seem to have happened, email us with your username and the approximate time the match ended.Delete
Sawyer/ipeg it’s darrebrDelete
Nothing to do with series3 but an interesting article in an edinburgh (scotland) newspaper.ReplyDelete
Does the name "Julie Danowitz" mean anything to anyone?
You’re so called system is really screwed up at this momentReplyDelete
But I’m not surprised it’s been rigged from the start but now players can’t even create a game and I have proof
If you have some problem creating games, please email us at support@FullerSystems.com so we can investigate it further with you.Delete
One word describes thisReplyDelete
And I have to laugh at the fact ipeg is again at the top of the leader board I played that person a few days ago and I spanked that person hard have screenshot etc
Your game is rigged
Hi again, I'm not sure why you believe that your ability to win against another player in a single game somehow then means the system is rigged in any way whatsoever. We have shown extensive evidence that demonstrates that is not the case, and are willing to show anything else you think might prove anything about your claim. If there is nothing we could ever show you, and you are not enjoying the game, then unfortunately this game may not be for you. This is a game, after all, so if you are not having fun, I wouldn't expect you would want to continue playing it. Still, I would prefer we have a discussion about what evidence could be provided, or what experiments could be done to validate your theory here that the system is in some way "rigged".Delete
Me to know how, congratulations on handing me one of my 24,000 plus losses on the app. I hope you understand, however that long term winning percentage is a better measure of skill, not the result of a single game. In multiplayer competitive play, my winning percentage is around 62%, while yours is around 48%. This explains why I am consistently near the top and you are not in the same category. Work to improve your game and you can move up. Looking forward to playing you again!Delete
What are the points for a win and points taken for a loss?ReplyDelete
Hi, there are no set CR points for a win or loss, as this is a ranking system and not a simple points system. For more details on how the system works, check out the blog post on the very first season and follow the links provided there.Delete
Well done for consistently hitting the top spots Sawyer. It's interesting to remember years ago in old England , above pub doors there was a sign , saying which games were allowed to be played ;ReplyDelete
It went something like this ; Mr Smith , licensed to sell alcohol & to allow games of absolute skill . Darts , cribbage & dominoes. ! Obviously Poker & Brag were not included !
Ton of luck in Cribbage, and I'm ranked 51 in competitive right now. Darts is actually the only pure skill game on your list.Delete
I was playing a Competitive Match this evening when my opponent disconnected near the end of the 3rd game. They were rejoining when all of a sudden the match disappeared and I was given the loss for the match. I was playing Angwa or something similar to that and their rating was around 3500. Please review the records on this match and make the neccessary correction ASAP. I know I did not disconnect!ReplyDelete
Hi, for support issues, email us at support@FullerSystems.com and include your username, the approximate time it happened (including your time zone) and a brief description of the problem.Delete
Yes, I agree , it's only darts that was on that list that's the only true game of skillReplyDelete
This is about Crib Rating got a question I've played over 12k in against opponents and have won 53percent of my games and have. Crib rating of 98 . Someone else has an under a 50percent win and only 8000 have 99 rating doesn't make senseReplyDelete
Hi, it sounds like you are talking about the XP Level, which is not a skill rating which you can find in the competitive matchmaking system and the corresponding CR. With XP points and level, you earn points by winning games, and the amount you win by determines how many points you earn. It is not simply a matter of games played or win percentage. See the FAQ for details.Delete
Just "lost" 2 matches. Lost first game, in the middle of first deal of second game cards came out, spades in order starting with ace, then cards disappeared from screen and I got a loss. So there is either a glitch in game or my phone as this happened twice in a row in exactly the same way.ReplyDelete
Yes, there appears to have been a bad update and we are looking into it.Delete
Is there a problem with the CR server? Ive played three times this morning and in all cases weve completed game 1 but been unable to ptogress with game 2.ReplyDelete
It deals me the cards and then they disappear... So can't discard any..
Yes, there appears to have been a bad update and we are looking into it.Delete
I just played a game where cards dealt then disappeared and asked me to discard. Had to quit the game. Played thousands of games and first time. Thought you should know.ReplyDelete
Thank you. There appears to have been a bad update and we are looking into it.Delete
I would hyperlink, but I'm not sure if it would work. Google live deck vs computer shuffle and there is an MTG forum about it. 7 shuffles folks. For all the people whining about the game being different.... it is. How many lazy Cribbage players shuffle at LEAST 7 times between hands? If you aren't then it's not random, and therefore nowt a pure game. If anyone wants to take time to improve their game, come find me. LePone, top 50 competetive. Let's chat and throw some truly random cards.ReplyDelete
I think it would be helpful if there was a place in the app where you could see how many competitive matches you've played in the week (or how many you still need to play). The push notifications are somewhat helpful, but I'd rather be able to monitor it. Competitive play is loads of fun though. Keep up the good work!ReplyDelete
Hi, thanks for the kind words and support for the game. Yes, we are looking to add that information to the game screen in the future.Delete
Your matchmaking system is not correctly counting points in the hands. Please...advise.Thank you.ReplyDelete
Hi, if you ever have any questions about how something is scored, please take a screenshot and send it to us for review at support@FullerSystems.comDelete
Hi I won 5 competing games in a row and did not level up are there new rules or something I have to joinReplyDelete
Hi, your level is a simple factor of your points. You are not guaranteed to level up by winning a certain number of matches.Delete
It seems the rating system really screws you when you're playing low level players. Last week I played someone rated 1681. I checked his stats and he only played 1 match and was 0-1, but he had a 59% win percentage in regular multiplayer. I only gained 1 point for beating him. It was not an easy point. Today, I beat someone rated 3163 and I didn't gain any points. My rating was 4405 at the time and remained at 4405 after beating him.ReplyDelete
Hi, the thing to keep in mind with the system is that it is primarily a ranking system and not a points system. This means that in the very rare case where you don't see the CR change, the underlying factors will absolutely change. If you are interested in a specific example where you didn't see your CR change, you can email support@FullerSystems.com and we can check it for you.Delete
I'm really enjoying the competitive multiplay, as I felt moving to the rating in the standard multiplay being based just on how many games you'd played completely ruined the whole thing!ReplyDelete
All it needs now is for the cards to be dealt randomly and it would be perfect. I just never get anything like the number of 12 hands dealt to me in real life, never mind 16+...
Hi, we don't claim to match your "real life" physical deck experience, as that is often different than truely random. Instead, we make certain that the cards are always randomly shuffled and dealt fairly. In real life, for most people they simply do not shuffle to achieve a statistically random deck for every single hand.Delete
Due to lazy shuffling, real cards are flawed. It is absolutely easier to get skunks and make a comeback with truely random cards used by these apps. Get used to it. It's a different game.Delete
Hi, I’ve previously posted this same comment but it has never appeared....ReplyDelete
After a game has ended, I would like to see match statistics, specifically the number of points pegged by each player, points in own crib, points in opponents crib. This would be very helpful to identify where improvements can be made. Thanks for providing the game!
Hi Pete, thanks for the suggestion. We do plan to make online multiplayer games have an ending screen similar to the single player game in the future, so something along these lines is being planned. Thanks for your support of the game!Delete
Thanks again for another great season! Is it possible to expand the vs. stats to the competitive mode? Would love to see matchup history when playing someone in competitive. Thank you!ReplyDelete
Thanks for the great suggestion. I'll add it to the list of things to consider for future updates!Delete
Do you keep your top 50 star pegs every season going forward or do you have to remain in top 50 every seasonReplyDelete
It is a reward you keep forever and doesn't go away.Delete
Since yesterday's update it is no longer possible to continue a classic game with the same player. Any touch of my screen after the initial game kicks my opponent and I'm automatically returned to the start screen.ReplyDelete
