This is starting to sound repetitive, but yet again there were more players in the Winter 2024 competitive season than we have seen in a long time. In fact, there were more players than we have ever seen before, and more matches played than ever before! I know that the competition was intense at every level. We will be keeping the changes made last season in place at least until further improvements are made in other related areas that we are actively working towards. Spring 2024 will match the format of Winter 2024 - no changes.

Winter 2024 Wrap Up

The Winter 2024 season brought a fresh wave of participants, with numerous new faces adding to the mix. However, amidst the influx of newcomers, there were also many familiar names who returned to showcase their skills, as evidenced by the final Top 50 standings. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to each and every individual who contributed to the season's success. Your active involvement is the cornerstone of our cribbage community, shaping its vibrancy and diversity, whether you made it to the Top 50 or not. I appreciate each of you for being a part of this wonderful journey. Thank you for making the Winter 2024 season memorable and enjoyable for all!

In 1st place for Winter 2024, we have "lbolt58", who is up from just 3rd place last season. 2nd place is someone we have seen before too, "nob4one", who is up from 12th last season. 3rd place goes to "iPeg", who was 10th last season, but certainly someone we have seen in the top positions often. "Mrpadre" will get our honorable mention this season, coming in at 10th and up from 27th last season. They held on to that position for a while here at the end of the season, and I know it took some solid effort to do that, with so much strong competition this season.

Other interesting positions to note include "VGKnights", who has now finished 5th for the second season in a row. "hillchem" moved up 5 positions from 17th to 12th, and "scout3" went up from 33rd last season to finish 14th!

I hope that you all enjoyed the competition. Congratulations to you all for your putting your skills to the test!

As usual, we have the special commendation given to those who secured a place within the Top 50. In recognition of your accomplishments, you've earned an in-game "board peg" symbolizing your achievement. The highest-ranking player receives the prestigious "crown" board peg, while all others in the Top 50 receive a distinctive "star" board peg. These pegs are prominently displayed during online multiplayer matches and serve as a permanent badge of distinction. If you see an opponent with one of these pegs, know that they've earned it through their performance in competitive play, securing a spot among the top contenders.

Remember: Complete Your 10 matches per week! See the FAQ for details.

Here was the final Top 50 for Winter 2024:

There were more players in the Autumn competitive season than we have seen in a long time. The competition was fierce, with some recognizable names in the world of cribbage also in the Leaderboard. The season started off extremely active, and just ramped up from there every week. I had thought that with the previous season being so active, many would slow down this time, but it was exactly the opposite! I know many of you noticed how busy things were, and with many new players (new to our competitive play, but clearly not new to cribbage itself) in the mix, it was very challenging.

New Season Updates

I want to quickly cover a handful of new season updates before providing a short summary of the end of the Autumn season. Some matchmaking adjustments have been made. We have tightened up the matchmaking algorithm in respect to what constitutes as an acceptable match between players of different estimated skill levels and expected match outcomes. There are several factors that the system considers when finding a match, and they have all had their limits narrowed to at least some degree. At the same time, other changes were made that will have the system progress through all possible matches just a little faster than in past seasons. Ultimately, we hope to see matches a little closer in ranking on average, and slightly fewer matches with larger skill rank differences, while also finding matches faster for everyone. Of course the best way to keep match wait times down is to continue to invite your friends to play! That is by far the biggest factor when finding a match, so do please encourage your fellow cribbage players to participate.

We have also enhanced how the "wait time" works while finding a match. Previously, if you started finding a match, then canceled and started again for any reason, your wait time in the matchmaking system would reset each time you started finding a match. That will no longer be the case. If you cancel finding a match, and then start again, the system will retain the original start time to calculate your total wait time. It will then "timeout" if no match is found based on when you first started finding a match. If you were someone who would stop and start a lot in a short period of time, and so rarely see any time out message, you may get the "no match found" message more often than before. If you were someone who would start finding a match and wait patiently, then this won't impact you at all. To further clarify, the total wait time before timing out has not changed. At 120 seconds from the first press of "Find Match", it will stop searching even if you canceled and restarted multiple times during that time. After those 2 minutes, regardless of if you saw the "no match found" message, if you start finding a match again, it will start the clock again too.

Autumn 2023 Wrap Up

Once again, my gratitude goes out to everyone who took part in the Autumn 2023 season. Your participation truly makes all the difference. Your dedication and involvement, whether or not you secured a place in the Top 50, mean a lot. Each player's contribution to our cribbage community is invaluable. Your enthusiasm and commitment elevate the competitive atmosphere, and make every match memorable and exciting. Thank you for being an essential part of this competition, and in bringing the incredible game of cribbage to others!

In 1st place for Autumn 2023, we have "Dhrun", who didn't place last season, but in the season just prior was in 2nd. They held that top spot for a while this season, and it was a tough season. "Dhrun" has also been in 2nd and 3rd place multiple times in past seasons, so it is really great to see them hit 1st place this time! 2nd place is also someone we have seen before too, but much more recently, "Saskie", who is up from 4th last season, and who was our "honorable mention" the season before. We are starting to get used to seeing them a lot around here as they had 1st a few seasons back too. 3rd place goes to "lbolt58", who was 19th last season (and 21st before that, and 29th before that), so quite an improvement! "konadive" held 3rd for a little while this season, but just couldn't quite hold on for the finish. They get our honorable mention this season.

Other interesting movements in the Top 50 included "VGKnights", up 21 places to finish 5th. "dph" moved up all the way from 48th last season to be 9th. As an interesting player note, "dph" has been playing in Cribbage Pro since at least February of 2011. They are one of a few long time players who play in the competitive system. So, a special thank you to "dph" for playing for so many years!

It was a lot of fun watching some names climb up (like "iPeg" making a late run to break into the top 10), and even fun to watch some who I thought were going to take it all, get bumped down this season. Although I'm sure it wasn't as much fun to actually be the player who dropped in standing, I hope that you all enjoyed the competition. Congratulations to you all for your putting your skills to the test!

As always, a special acknowledgment goes to those who achieved a place within the Top 50! As recognition for your efforts and display of skill, you have been awarded with an in-game "board peg" that represents your accomplishment. The top finisher is awarded the "crown" board peg, and all others in the Top 50 are awarded a "star" board peg. These pegs are shown to everyone when playing in online multiplayer games, and they are permanent, so if you see your opponent has one of them you can know that they have earned it by finishing in the Top 50 in competitive play.

Remember: Complete 10 matches per week! See the FAQ for details.

Here was the final Top 50 for Autumn 2023:

The season started off very busy, as is becoming a trend, with a lot of participants and some more new faces. More total games and matches were played this season than in the last season, and more than in many others as well. It was a busy one for many.

As we start into the Autumn 2023 season, there are no significant changes to the format. I know there are still desires for some changes, and we are still planning to do some, so I truly appreciate everyone's patience with that. After a bit more about last season, we have some important news about changes for Contest play as well, so be sure to read through to the bottom of this post for that.

The onset of Summer 2023 ushered in a wave of eager participants, with fresh faces gracing the Leaderboard. I'm sure some of you were thinking we may not see some of the past top players when the season first started, but that definitely changed as things progressed. The competition throughout the season was fierce, especially during the closing weeks at the pinnacle of the Leaderboard. These final weeks were marked by a captivating back-and-forth struggle, akin to a dynamic game of "musical chairs" as mentioned by some social media posts about the season. Watching "Mrpadre" move up to first place, then shortly later back down in what was essentially the final moments of the season, was both surprising and exciting to watch!

A sincere thanks again to all who took part, both as active contenders on the Leaderboard and as those just having a good time competing against your friend's ranks. It truly does take all of you to make a season work, and so thank you all for playing. Regardless of whether you found a spot within the coveted Top 50, the commitment and engagement shown by each of you is appreciated. It really does take all of you to make a season! Lastly, I just want to again acknowledge and extend a special thank you to those who introduced their friends to the exhilarating world of cribbage, and particularly our competitive cribbage format.

In 1st place for Summer 2023, we have "rookie22" up from 3rd last season. This top spot had some back and forth, even up to the very last few minutes of the season where a few final games made the difference to holding on! 2nd place is also someone we have seen before, "Mrpadre", up from 33rd last season. 3rd place goes to "iPeg", who really doesn't need much of an introduction, but was super fun to watch trade places as they broke into the Top 50 this season after joining in quite a bit later than usual. As a kind of honorable mention this season, we have "Saskie" finishing 4th, who was our 1st place last season. It looks like perhaps there was a "push" to try and get a few final games in by several players over the final days and hours, that caused a lot of back and forth in those top spots! That strategy may have worked for some, while not so much for others.

Other interesting movements in the Top 50 included "holinzend", up 25 places to finish 5th. "cbx1000z" who wasn't in the Top 50 last season, but finished in 7th place, "nob4one" finished in 10th up from 46th, and many others making big moves from past seasons as well!! The atmosphere was electric as we observed an exhilarating showdown for the leading ranks during the conclusive phase of this season. The recent weeks brought us closely contested rankings that had us on the edge of our seats. It was truly a delight to watch, and I sincerely trust that the enjoyment you experienced matched the enthusiasm I felt! Congratulations to each and every one of you for your exceptional displays of skill!

A special acknowledgment for all who achieved a place within the Top 50 this season! Starting from this season onward, we're taking a different route by not giving out Cribbage Pro Gold awards for the Top 50. Very few of those Promotional Gold awards given out in the past were ever used, so practically speaking this isn't a significant change for most of you. Still, I wanted to share some insight into what is going on with the Contests system and why Cribbage Pro Gold wasn't awarded this season.

All players who were eligible to cash out their Cribbage Pro Gold have already received notifications about this. However, for those who are not yet aware, I'd like to share that the Cribbage Pro Contests system has gone into retirement and officially closed as of August 15th, 2023. There are several factors as to why that is, but after much consideration, and particularly given the limited popularity of Contests, we've decided it's the right time to move forward and focus on other work. This allows us to shift our focus towards other areas of the game while we work on bringing in more exciting features for all of you to enjoy! Thank you to everyone in the Cribbage Pro community who actively participated in the Contests system. We're working hard on introducing new and exciting features for you to enjoy in the future, possibly with that Gold still being used. Your continued support means the world to us, and we can't wait to share these new updates with you!

If you still have Cribbage Pro Gold in your account that is more than only "Promotional Gold" (so Gold that you actually either purchased or Promotional Gold that you used in a Contest and won as a prize amount - making it eligible to be cashed out), you can still cash that out if you missed the initial transition/retirement window. Simply email us any time with your request (email from the email address on your account, and include your username). The cash out process will be done manually now that the Contest system is retired, so it will run a little slower, but we will still get you cashed out. We will hold that cash out system open for an entire year from the date the Contests system ended (so until Aug. 15th 2024).

For those who have Promotional Gold that doesn't have a cash out value, like that which was awarded for a past competitive season and never used, it is still there on your account (even though future updates to the app will remove the Contests section so you may not see it). We hope to bring some new features in the future where you can make use of it at that time. As such, we will continue to not enforce the 6 month expiration of Promotional Gold, so it will stay there on your account. We don't have any more details to announce right now about what those features will be, but we will share more when we can.

If you have any questions, feedback on what you would like to see around prizes, structure or anything else, email us any time at support@FullerSystems.com.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3607768067535353225.post-28462933019518957642023-05-30T15:56:00.001-07:002023-05-30T15:56:38.941-07:00Competitive Cribbage - Summer 2023
Get ready to heat up the cribbage board, because the Summer 2023 Season of Competitive Cribbage is live and in full swing!

The exciting Spring 2023 season of competitive cribbage has come to a close, with all the statistics and top performers firmly locked and recorded. The season started off with great enthusiasm, and as the allure of the spring weather grew stronger, the level of participation and number of matches played stabilized to an about average level. Following an exceptionally active previous season, it is gratifying to witness a considerable number of players who remain dedicated to the thrill of the competitive format. Adding to the anticipation for the upcoming season is the exciting release of a new version of the game that is gradually rolling out to players over the next few weeks.

As we dive into the sizzling Summer 2023 season, note that we're keeping the format consistent and not shaking things up right now, with no major changes to the format.

Spring 2023 welcomed a fresh influx of enthusiastic players, with many newcomers showcasing their skills and climbing the Leaderboard throughout the season. It's a real joy to witness the arrival of these new contenders and witness their exciting journeys unfold! The competition this season was thrilling, as the race for the top position was incredibly close for a while, with mere fractions separating these cribbage titans. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all who participated, both on and off the Leaderboard, for your invaluable contributions. Even if you didn't secure a spot in the final Top 50, your dedication and involvement are truly appreciated. And let's not forget to extend a special thanks to those who brought along their friends to share in the cribbage excitement! Together, you made Spring 2023 a season to remember.

In 1st place for Spring 2023, we have "Saskie" up from far behind last season, although a regular player and past top finisher a few seasons back. Good to see you back in the mix! 2nd place is someone we have seen in the Top 50 multiple times before, "Dhrun". In 3rd we have "rookie22", who may need to consider a username change in the near future, as they were a top finisher just last season as well. Other interesting movements in the Top 50 included "TC2", up 10 places to finish 4th. "Doksboy" moved up 13 places to finish in 9th place, "MTBiggs" finished in 10th up from 22nd, and "scout3" finished 13th up from 261st!! The excitement was intense as we witnessed a thrilling showdown for the top positions in the final stretch of this season, with the last few weeks delivering some nail-biting, neck-and-neck battles. It was a blast to witness, and I genuinely hope that all of you had as much fun as I did! Let's not forget about the incredible achievements of numerous other players who made significant strides during this season. Alongside them, we can also see many familiar names on the list, which calls for a big round of applause and congratulations to each and every one of you! Well done on your outstanding performances!

Kudos and heartfelt recognition are extended to each and every player who secured a spot in the prestigious Top 50 this season! As a token of recognition for your remarkable achievements, you have been bestowed with the special in-game "board peg" that symbolizes your triumph. But wait, that's not all! To truly honor your exceptional skills, we are also thrilled to present you with Cribbage Pro Gold that can be used in the Cribbage Pro Contests system and then redeemed for cash (awards must be used at least once in a Contest to be cashed out to USDC, see the full terms and conditions for details). The Gold awards do expire, so use them or lose them! If you are awarded Gold, and are not sure what it is good for (or how to access the Contests system), read through the links above or email us any time if you have questions. On iOS you will need the "Cribbage Pro Contests" version of the app, and on Android and Windows you need to install the game using the Amazon Appstore. It is easy to do, so don't let that app install process get in the way of some good cribbage fun! The Cribbage Pro Gold awards are as follows (not cumulative):

4 Gold for Top 50

7 Gold for Top 25

10 Gold for Top 10

20 Gold for 3rd Place

30 Gold for 2nd Place

50 Gold for 1st Place

The top finisher is awarded the "crown" board peg, and all others in the Top 50 are awarded a "star" board peg. These pegs are shown to everyone when playing in online multiplayer games, and they are permanent, so if you see your opponent has one of them you can know that they have earned it by finishing in the Top 50 in competitive play.

Remember: Complete 10 matches per week! See the FAQ for details.

Here was the final Top 50 for Spring 2023:

Here are some of the highlights of what's new in Cribbage Pro that you're sure to love:

New Logo/Icon:

The game icon has received a subtle but significant update. It now boasts an overall brighter color, showcases more of the cards, and makes it easier to recognize at a glance. This way, you can be confident that you're playing the same fantastic game every time you come across the Cribbage Pro icon. Here's a glimpse of what you can expect to see across all platforms where you can find Cribbage Pro:

Hand Grades: The game now features a "Hand Grade" for you AND your opponent's hands!

Now, with the Hand Grade feature, you can access a detailed breakdown of how your discard choice compares to the alternatives whenever you finish a round (the calculation process is explained below). Simply select the "Grade Details" button to review the specific factors that contributed to the hand's final grade:

Selecting "Grade Details" shows the potential scores and ranking for each possible discard:

The top line shows whether it was your hand, or your opponent's, and the calculated grade.

The second line shows all of the cards dealt for that hand, and who is the dealer with the crib.

If you want to learn more about how the crib average and total is calculated, you can select the "?" button.

Every possible discard to the crib is shown in each section that follows, sorted from the highest grade to lowest. On the other hand, if the player has the crib, the crib values will be added to the average score.

For instance, in the example above, the "Avg - Crib" shows the estimated average score with the crib values subtracted. However, if it were the player's crib, it would show "Avg + Crib" instead.

This amazing tool can turbocharge your gameplay, providing you with invaluable insights to make those all-important discard decisions. But, let's not forget, this is just a general guide, so feel free to mix things up and try some creative strategies to outsmart your opponents! Whether you're going all-out for the highest hand grade, or adopting a defensive playstyle, there's always room for some good old-fashioned fun. Remember, this tool is just one piece of the puzzle, and when you're up against some advanced players, you may need to throw in some well planned board-position-based tactics to emerge victorious! Still, like many of the other features in the game, if this is not for you, you can simply hide the Hand Grade in the game settings at any time.

Round Summary: See a summary of scoring for each round of play!

We're thrilled to introduce the new Round Summary feature, which displays the scores for both players across all scoring types at the end of each round of play. Once the crib is scored, simply take a quick peek at the game board to see this awesome new addition in action:

Let's break it down: Cut card points are only earned when the Jack is cut, commonly known as "two for his heels".Therefore, it's common to see a zero score in this category. Meanwhile, "Pegg." refers to the points earned during the pegging/play phase, while Hand and Crib are pretty self-explanatory. You can use this feature to keep a pulse on how you are doing in each round relative to your opponent. If the Round Summary is distracting you for any reason, don't fret! You can easily disable it in the game settings.

New "Auto-Deal", "Auto-Go" & Animation Speed Options

Get ready to take your game customization to the next level with some awesome new options! We're talking about auto-deal, auto-go, and animation speed features that allow you to tailor the game to your preferred playstyle. With auto-deal, the game automatically deals the cards without any button pressing required. Similarly, auto-go automatically processes the go, when it's time to "say go". And as for the animation speed option, you now have the power to select your preferred sliding value, ranging from 0 to 100 percent of the possible animation speed (which is also the computer's play/discard speed). A value of "0" means a slow and steady pace, while "100" is lightning fast! Choose whatever speed feels just right for you and your style of play. You can always adjust these settings at any time, without affecting any saved game progress.

New Options to Mark Board Progress, Highlighting "Par Holes" & More

We've added a bunch of exciting new options, so don't forget to take a moment to explore them all in the game. Here are a couple more that we think are particularly noteworthy: First up, you can now mark your board progress with filled holes, making it easier to keep track of your score on the game board as the game progresses. By default, the holes are filled in as the front peg progresses for each player, allowing for a quick glance at the board to see the score.

You can now also adjust the size of the playing cards shown during the game as well. If you have a device that is wider than it is tall, if it has an unusual screen size, or maybe just because you like to see more of the game table and less of the cards, you can adjust the Playing Card Size any time you want. You can choose any percentage from the very small 50% to the full usual 100%.

If you're looking to up your game even further, the "Par Holes" feature shows the ideal score progression on the game board during gameplay, based on the cribbage "Theory of 26". This is all about helping you with your board position strategy, and was discussed in more detail in our blog post titled Cribbage Strategy and Board Position. If you're new to the world of "Par Holes," the "Theory of 26," or playing based on board position, don't worry! We've got you covered. Check out the previously linked article for an introduction to these concepts, and then follow some of the links provided at the bottom of the article for further study. But, if you're already a seasoned player and ready to take your game to the next level, then enable the "par holes" option as a guide along your journey to improve your strategy. With this feature enabled, each of the par holes is highlighted on the game board, along with information on who was the first dealer to start the game and the current round of play. (Take a look at the board image below for an example.) This option isn't enabled by default, but we highly recommend giving it a try - it could make a huge difference in your game! So, when you're ready to up your cribbage game, give the "par holes" option a shot and see how much it can help.

New Game Board & Peg Design

You might have already noticed the sleek and stylish new game board that comes with Cribbage Pro's latest update. The old square tracks have been replaced with rounded corners that offer a more traditional and easy-to-read look. The pegs have been refined, too, with better angles and smoother animations that make them even more enjoyable to use (make sure to keep an eye on them when you score that winning point!) Here is the new game board with the "Par Holes" and "Mark Board Progress" options enabled:

New End of Game Summary

We've also updated the end game screen to provide you with more details on your performance compared to your opponent. In addition to showing the last cards played in the game, you can now see a detailed breakdown of the final score. This will give you a better understanding of how you and your opponent performed in each scoring category, including points for hand, crib, pegging, and the Hand Grade! Take a closer look and use this information to fine-tune your strategy and improve your game:

New Account Management Options

Looking to protect your account or just play a quick game without creating an account? We've got you covered! It is now much easier to log out of your account entirely if you want, as well as use a new "Guest" mode of play where you don't need an account at all to enjoy a quick single player game. This means it is now easier to manage your account security, and particularly if you need to switch to a different account or want to make sure nobody else can change your account if you use a shared device to play. It also makes it clear if you are a "Guest" playing, and what can/can't be saved in that mode.

UPDATE: Now Set Your Avatar to Any Image!

You can now set your avatar to any image you like! You no longer need to use Facebook to have a custom image or photo for your avatar. Just go to the game settings, and under the account section you can now choose an image directly. Note that there is a review process with any image submitted, and if the system detects that your image may be inappropriate in any way, it must then go through a full audit before it can be approved. So, keep it clean and family friendly, and you should be good to go!

Other Improvements/Changes

We've made countless improvements and changes in this update, from the way messages and input prompts are displayed to the size and positioning of various elements throughout the game. The game itself has remained relatively unchanged (aside from the features mentioned already), so the basic layout is all the same as before.

New Unified System for All Platforms

If you are a fan of Cribbage Pro, you may have noticed some differences in how the game looked on different devices. But with this latest update, we have unified the game under one system, which means that everyone now has access to the same features and game engine. This is great news for players, as it means that we can roll out new updates and features to everyone simultaneously, regardless of the device they use to play.

This update also allows us to explore new and exciting ways to bring the game to even more devices in the future, which we are really excited about! And for players who are new to Cribbage Pro, these changes make the game more approachable and easier to learn, while still providing the same immersive and customizable experience that fans of the game have come to expect.

So why not give the latest update a try and experience Cribbage Pro for yourself? Whether you are a seasoned player or just starting out, we are confident that you will find the game more enjoyable and fun to play than ever before. Get the update, and play Cribbage Pro today!

** Note that the update to the latest version of Cribbage Pro on mobile devices requires Android version 7.0 or higher, and Apple iOS/iPadOS 12.5 or higher.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3607768067535353225.post-51343063490297831582023-03-31T16:17:00.001-07:002023-04-03T15:33:38.920-07:00Cribbage Competitive Matchmaking - Active Times of Day
I was recently asked, and have been asked in various ways before, about what times of the day are most active in Cribbage Competitive Matchmaking. The goal here is to provide some insight into that question, and to help people find the best times to look for a match, particularly if you have a more flexible schedule and just want to know when is best to log in and play.

First, a few important notes. All times are in UTC, so you will need to convert to your local time and consider things like Daylight Saving Time if that happens in your part of the world. Second, I realize that in sharing this information it could make the busy times even busier and the less active times even harder to find a match. However, I hope that in the end this is beneficial to everyone.

Here is the current activity for Spring 2023, by hour of the day (again, in UTC).

As the chart shows, this is just so far this season, which has only been a few weeks. Note that the 9th hour UTC in the winter (no DST) is 1am PST (4am EST), while the 8th hour in "spring" is still 1am in Pacific time, but that is in PDT (due to DST). You subtract 8 from UTC time to get PST, and subtract 7 to get PDT. So things don't really change much from season to season. That said, around the 14th hour through to about the 3rd hour (the next day) UTC time, there is the highest amount of activity in the matchmaking system. To do the math for you, that would be from 7am PDT (10am EDT) to 8pm PDT (11pm EDT) as the most active. The highest points are really from around 21/22 to 2, if you are looking for the height of activity.

Lastly, with respect to the day of the week, as I'm sure you are all thinking of that as your next question, things are surprisingly "flat". Saturday, Sunday and Monday see maybe just a slight increase overall for the entire season, and sometimes Wednesday does as well. So Tuesday would be the "worst" of the days, but not by a lot. I have no idea why Wednesday sees a spike from time to time, but, it does, and then often climbs a little through Thursday and Friday into the weekend. If I wanted to play when most everyone else is, I would not worry about the day of the week so much, but then try for a time around 2pm to 7pm Pacific time, 5pm to 10pm Eastern.

Again, I hope this information is helpful, and can be used to bring more people together to find the best challenging, and fun matches!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3607768067535353225.post-89266617352661980382023-03-07T14:57:00.001-08:002023-03-07T15:12:19.757-08:00Competitive Cribbage - Spring 2023
The Spring 2023 Season of Competitive Cribbage is Live!

The very busy Winter 2023 season of competitive cribbage has now closed. All of the stats and top finishers are locked and recorded. Winter 2023 was one of the most (almost nearly the top) active seasons so far! It had more players than we have had in quite a long time, and a lot more matches played than ever before! That says a lot, considering the seasons are a little shorter now than they were when we first started. I know some of you still had times where finding a match was harder than ideal, and other times where you were matched with someone with a lower CR that you may have felt shouldn't have been matched. I understand that frustration, and I'm working on some ideas to help address that better in the future. Our journey to the best system may never reach a final destination, but it will be a work of constant improvement. The best solution to both of these for right now will be to encourage your friends to participate too. The more people who play more often, the faster matches can be found and the closer those matches will be.

Although the weather outside where I am right now isn't exactly "spring like" just yet, I hope it will be soon! I have been very busy getting app updates and features developed lately, so this Spring 2023 season keeps the format consistent with no significant changes.

Winter 2023 was an exciting season that also welcomed several new players. The Top 50 has quite a few new players. I still love seeing new players come in and make a run for it (as one definitely did this season)! Thank you to all for participating and bringing your friends! Thank you also to everyone who participated at every level, even if you didn't make the final Top 50.

In 1st place for Winter 2023, we have "iPeg" up from 5th last season, and definitely a regular top finisher. Honestly, that is pretty impressive. Someday we will need to have iPeg share all of their secrets with the world. 2nd place is someone entirely new to the Top 50, and relatively new to Cribbage Pro as well, "rookie22". I suppose the username says it all. In 3rd we have "nob4one", who we have seen around these parts before as well. Other interesting movements in the Top 50 included "dcpastore", who made a valiant run for 2nd or 3rd, but got bumped back to finish 5th. "Domerzag" moved up 27 placed to finish in 11th place, and "rattle15" finished in 12th up 24! It was super fun for me to watch the battle for positions towards the end of this season, and in particular the 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions in the last few days. I hope you all enjoyed it as well! There are, of course, many others who made some significant gains, and many familiar names on the list as well, so a hearty Congratulations to you all!!

Everyone who finished the season in the Top 50 ("Recent" list), has been awarded both a special in-game "board peg" as well as Cribbage Pro Gold that can be used in the Cribbage Pro Contests system and then redeemed for cash (awards must be used at least once in a Contest to be cashed out to USDC, see the full terms and conditions for details). It is super easy to do, so don't let that app install process get in the way of some good cribbage fun!

Here was the final Top 50 for Winter 2023:

Have you ever wondered what was the best discard decision among all of the possibilities, and why? Now you can know with our new hand "Grade" tool, which is also integrated into the hints system! It is even visible for your opponent's hand, and even in multiplayer games! I plan to discuss more about how that feature works in the future, but I'm also excited to announce that the beta is now available for those on iOS and iPadOS devices through the Apple TestFlight system! For Apple users, just use this link to sign up and get started with the latest version of Cribbage Pro here: https://testflight.apple.com/join/EbFA7iuB (For the "Contests" version on iOS, use this link: https://testflight.apple.com/join/3UstfEqD)For Android users, continue to simply go to the Google Play Store listing for the free version of Cribbage Pro on your Android device (if reading this on a different device, you can sign up here) and select the option to sign up for the Beta and install it directly there.

As a beta tester, you will be able to get early access to all of the new features, while also having your input guide the future of Cribbage Pro! I have received a lot of great feedback already, and it has shaped the game, and in particular the new features. I am listening, and really want your input!

You can always switch back out of the beta at any time, but if you have any suggestions at all, please take a moment and send an email to support@FullerSystems.com with your feedback about the beta. This beta version uses a new "game engine", which is kind of like an operating system for games. As such, it will look a little different around things like how it scales to fit your screen, animations/sounds, some new options/settings, prompts/input screens, and other similar non-cribbage specific things. If you have used the desktop Mac/Windows version of Cribbage Pro, then much of this will look familiar (if you have the latest updates just released - so be sure to get that update).

This is a beta test version, which means it could still have a few bugs we need to work out. If you see one, let us know right away and don't assume we already know about it!

The beta will likely continue into January (Update: February/March) 2023 before this new version will become the full released version for everyone to use. Having all of you help beta test is extremely valuable to me, so go check it out and brag to your friends about getting early access to some fun new features!!

UPDATE Feb 2023: The feedback and participation has been amazing! Thank you all so much for participating, and even more so for providing great feedback. We have decided to run the beta a few weeks longer than originally planned. This will allow more time to make more improvements, while also giving everyone a little more time to play with the game and provide more feedback. I'm so excited to get this update out to everyone, but also want to make sure it is the best it can be! Keep that feedback coming!!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3607768067535353225.post-44094156791519787792022-11-15T14:58:00.000-08:002022-11-15T14:58:12.246-08:00Competitive Cribbage - Winter 2023
The Winter 2023 Season of Competitive Cribbage is Live!

The Autumn 2022 season has closed, and all stats and final top finishers recorded. Can you feel that chill in the air (apologies to our friends in the southern hemisphere)? I definitely can, and with it the Winter 2023 Season of Competitive Cribbage is here! This new season is just a little longer than usual at 112 days. Please also read through this post for some important news about a new upcoming version of Cribbage Pro.

Autumn 2022 was a shorter season (77 days), for mostly logistical reasons, with a few less players as well, which tends to happen this time of year as everyone is busy with so many things. In some ways it was more competitive in a tighter time frame, well at the same time a handful fewer participants is one less person to win against and makes some room for others to join the list. At the same time, I know this also meant having to wait a little longer to find a match. Please continue to spread the word about Competitive Cribbage with your cribbage playing friends. Or, better yet, help a friend learn the great game of cribbage and join us here! I humbly suggest that Cribbage Pro is a great tool to teach the game.

The Top 50 has quite a few players new in the mix. I love seeing new players come in and make a run for it! Impressive. 2nd place is "TC2" '(3rd last season, and someone we have all seen around these parts before). In 3rd we have "Dhrun", who was in 11th last season. Other interesting movements in the Top 50 included "ernie313" who moved up 15 places to be 6th (and was several places higher earlier), "MondoMan" up 35 to 7th place, "hillchem" finishing in 11th up 36 places! As this is a beta test version, it means it could still have a few bugs we need to work out. If you see one, let us know right away and don't assume we already know about it.

The game itself is the same, and the way things work hasn't changed in any meaningful way. So, you may wonder why we did this if nothing major is changing. The short answer is that this new system will allow us to do much more in the future, and add more features that many have asked for, while doing it in an efficient way. Today, when I make a change of any kind to the game, I generally have to do the work 3+ times (once for each platform the game currently runs on). That takes, as you might have guessed, roughly 3x the amount of work to do just about anything. I sure would like to be able to have that time to work on making the game better, and so that is a major advantage of this change - more features, faster and more consistently. The other reasons are more technical, and involve how game engines work to make a game better in ways that if I tried to do it on my own would take huge amounts of time. The various game engines give you these things "for free" (it is included as part of that system - not to be confused with actually not costing any money). That means I can also develop new things for the game faster overall.

I hope to run this Android version of the beta for a few more weeks before possibly bringing a test version to those of you on Apple devices (the testing system with Apple is a bit more "involved"). If that is something you know you want to be involved with, then install the Apple provided "TestFlight" app from the App Store now so you are ready to go when it is available.. Following that, this new version will become the full released version for everyone to use. If you have some time, consider trying it out and giving me your feedback (good, bad, "meh" - or anything else). Having all of you help beta test is really helpful, and so your feedback in that and always is extremely valuable to me!

As a reminder, if you have played here and have some thoughts on what you would like to see around prizes, structure or anything else, please email us at support@FullerSystems.com with your suggestions.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com43tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3607768067535353225.post-64139860447114681612022-08-30T15:55:00.000-07:002022-08-30T15:55:22.851-07:00Competitive Cribbage - Autumn 2022 Season
The Autumn 2022 Season of Competitive Cribbage is Live!

The Summer 2022 season is in the books, and all stats are locked in and recorded. I'll keep the intro short this season, as I have some ideas to share after the important details about last season. If you are most interested in that, then scroll down past the first table on this post.

The Top 50 has quite a few players new in the mix. I love seeing new players come in and make a run for it! Thank you to all for participating and bringing your friends! Thank you also to everyone who participated at every level, even if you didn't make the final Top 50. Don't forget to invite your friends to compete and see who really is the best cribbage player!

In 1st place for Summer 2022, we have "ThreeG" (welcome back)! 2nd place is "iPeg" (so close, yet...) In 3rd we have "TC2", who was in 25th last season, but has been near the top a few times now as well (see below). Other interesting movements in the Top 50 included "dkatz1877" who moved up 45 places from last season to be 4th, "bbaer1" up 29 to 8th place, "cyrusg" up 22 to 10th and of course the many new faces who are scattered throughout the Top 50 this season who fought particularly hard in the final days of the season to make the cut! Congratulations!!

The Gold awards do expire, so use them or lose them! If you are awarded Gold, and are not sure what it is good for (or how to access the Contests system), read through the links above or email us any time if you have questions. On iOS you will need the "Cribbage Pro Contests" version of the app, and on Android you need to install the game using the Amazon Appstore.

Here was the final Top 50 for Summer 2022:

There are multiple ideas (as shared by a few of you), about what to do with this list. One possibility is to run a "Tournament of Champions" for everyone on the list (or maybe just some, or add everyone from the Top 5 instead of 3). There are several variations on this idea, but in order to prioritize it as something to consider, I would really like to know what everyone thinks.

Please either comment here or email and let us know what you think. Could a tournament be fun to see done in some way, even if you are not on the list? If you are on this list and are interested, send us an email confirming your interest. Lastly, assuming there is interest in a tournament of some kind, would you be interested in watching the games live as they happen (streamed live on YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, etc)? If you think that would be awesome, and if you would want to participate in some other way (say, to add color commentary as I'm not sure anyone wants to hear my voice announce the games), let me know. Again, please add your thoughts in the comments or share via email. I will say that I personally find the idea of watching a live game against these players pretty interesting, but that might just be me.

As a reminder, if you have played here and have some thoughts on what you would like to see around prizes, structure or anything else, please email us at support@FullerSystems.com with your suggestions.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com42tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3607768067535353225.post-52767830857820329872022-05-31T15:57:00.000-07:002022-05-31T15:57:05.665-07:00Competitive Cribbage - Summer 2022
It is time for the Cribbage Pro Summer 2022 Season of Competitive Matchmaking! If you are here primarily for what is new/changed, then scroll down to the final "News for The New Season" section below. The Spring 2022 season has fully wrapped up, and as usual it was entertaining to watch the rise and fall of different players throughout the season again. I still find myself cheering for different players on and off throughout the season. I admit I also often wish I could personally participate, but we have a rule that employees/contractors are prohibited from this and Contest play (and from the leaderboards entirely, in case you were wondering).

The Top 50 had quite a few new faces yet again this season. It is great to see all the new challengers working so hard to make their way to the top! Everyone loves an underdog, I suppose. Things just seem to be getting more and more competitive, so thank you to all for participating and bringing your friends! Thank you also to everyone who participated in this great game of cribbage, even if you didn't quite make the Top 50. I hope you enjoyed the journey.

In 1st place for Spring 2022, we have "Mrpadre" for the first time! It is nice to see Mrpadre back this season, as they were in the top 10 last season as well! 2nd place is "ernie313", and ernie313 has been in the Top 50 many times in the past as well, finishing last season at 33rd. In 3rd we have "Dhrun", who was in 2nd last season and also becoming a regular around these parts. Other interesting movements in the Top 50 included "WhyADuck" who has placed in the Top 50 before, but wasn't there last season and is 4th this season, and "Br1Guy" who we have definitely seen before, moving up just a bit from 13th to 9th! "scoot1234" came up from 28th last season to finish 19th this season, while "jjonell" came from 42nd to finish 36th.

If you are awarded Gold, and are not sure what it is good for (or how to access the Contests system), read through the links above or email us any time if you have questions. On iOS you will need the "Cribbage Pro Contests" version of the app, and on Android you need to install the game using the Amazon Appstore. As it looks like many are not using the Cribbage Pro Gold they win (which makes it kind of a useless prize for them), this part of the prize may change for the Summer 2022 winners (please email us your suggestions). The Cribbage Pro Gold awards are as follows (not cumulative):

4 Gold for Top 50

7 Gold for Top 25

10 Gold for Top 10

20 Gold for 3rd Place

30 Gold for 2nd Place

50 Gold for 1st Place

The top finisher is awarded the "crown" board peg, and all others in the Top 50 are awarded a "star" board peg.

The levels in Competitive Matchmaking are available in the FAQ.

News for The New Season

Some of you have been asking, and patiently waiting, for some bigger changes. However, there will not be big changes for this season.

During the Spring 2022 season, while you were all playing (and we were watching all the ups and downs and crunching the numbers), we spent a lot of time working on several different ways to bring ideas around a single game match to the competitive system. The idea was to lighten the games required, and the time needed to participate, as not everyone is able to do so with a 3 game match. Ultimately, it just didn't work out as hoped, and so we couldn't release it.

We worked through several different ways to try to provide for a single game match, but in testing and analysis, it just could never provide good results. What I mean by that is our system simply could not accurately isolate the skill from the luck with just a single game, even if the total number of games played went up significantly (which it is also unclear if that would be the case). Playing more games against other players just doesn't compensate. This means, among other criteria, that it couldn't accurately predict the winner (meaning the skill calculated isn't good enough), or then subsequently calculate the skill rank adjustments to be made reliably as a result, when tested against real world game data. Either the skill ranking system we use (even with various tweaks/changes to it), or the game of cribbage itself, just doesn't allow for it to happen. I personally try to hold a high standard for everything we do, and if anything can't be shown to meet or exceed that standard, no matter if we have spent a lot of effort on it, we will not release it.

As we have tested lots of different skill ranking systems before selecting the one used today, I honestly don't think that is the problem, but likely this is just the nature of cribbage that there can often be a non-trivial amount of luck in a single game. Frankly, the "Best of 3" isn't perfect (and I think there are things we can still do to help more there), but given the limitations (like the amount of time people can play), it ends up being a good compromise. So, because of all that time working on these things that didn't result in changes this season, we decided to not make any other core changes. There just wasn't enough time. There are some minor things, but mostly just around making the system more reliable, and bug fixes. So, we have decided to put this task aside for now, and to move on to other improvements that many are also asking for.

As a reminder, if you have played a few seasons here and have some thoughts on what you would like to see around prizes, structure or anything else, please email us at support@FullerSystems.com with your suggestions.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com47tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3607768067535353225.post-26481834113477847582022-04-04T14:14:00.001-07:002022-04-04T14:14:53.186-07:00Calculating the Odds of Winning a Cribbage Game – Part 1
A Guest post by Donald E. Heller

As an almost life-long and daily cribbage player, one of the things I enjoy about the game is the ebb and flow of a typical match. At any point in time, player 1 can have a strong lead, looking like a lock to win the game, and then player 2 can get two or three great hands and pass her opponent to go on and win the game.

As this occurs, I often think about what the odds were of player 1 winning the game given the score and position on the board. For example, if I am ahead of the other player 90 to 75, what are the odds that I will win the game? This calculation is similar to what sports websites often do for games in progress. One example from ESPN is shown in figure 1 below.

Figure 1: ESPN win probability chart for Major League Baseball (screenshot courtesy ESPN)

In this game, in the top of the 4th inning and none out, and Cleveland ahead 2-0, ESPN calculates that Cleveland has a 67.3% chance of winning the game. This is based on the score and point in the game, along with ESPN’s calculations of the skills and track records of each of the two teams and their respective players.

Is it possible to calculate similar odds of winning in cribbage? My curiosity led me to a web search, but I could not find anything along the lines of what I was looking for. Being a user of Cribbage Pro, I reached out to the team there to see if they knew of anyone who had ever done these calculations. They did not, but said that they were willing to share some data with me if I was interested in doing the calculations myself. Being an experienced quantitative researcher, I agreed to take on the challenge.

Fuller Systems (the developer of Cribbage Pro) generously provided me with the data necessary to do the calculations from their log files of Cribbage Pro users. After providing me with a small sample file of anonymous data (data that couldn’t be tied back to any Cribbage Pro user), I worked on extracting the data and analyzing it. I was able to do the odds calculations I had hoped for, so Fuller Systems then provided me with a set of larger files – 72 files, each representing a consecutive hour’s worth of log records from Cribbage Pro games over the course of three days, and containing the step-by-step records of games played on the app. These are massive files, each one of the 72 with over one million records in it. In order to make the data analyzable in Stata, the statistical software that I use, I had to extract samples from each game and then combine these samples from the 72 files into a single, smaller file that could be analyzed to do the odds calculations.

This smaller file represented over 600,000 games that were completed during the 72-hour period for which Fuller Systems provided me with the data. From the scores at each point in time, and knowing who won each game, I was able to calculate the odds of each player winning the game given the score.

There are certainly some limitations to these calculations. I did not know anything about the players, so I could not conduct a sophisticated point-in-time prediction for each game that takes into account the skill and track record of each player, similar to what ESPN does in its predictions. So these predictions are what I would describe as “player-neutral,” i.e., they only relate what we know about a score at a given point with who won the game in the end, but nothing about the skill of the players.

Another limitation is that I did not calculate the odds for every potential score. To keep the analysis simple, I analyzed scores that were reasonably close and would typically be found in games. In other words, I did not calculate the odds of winning when the score was 115 for player 1 to 60 for player 2 (though one could intuit that player 1 would have very high odds of winning the game and skunking player 2).

With these caveats, table 1 shows some examples of what I found. The full table can be found here (note: in the table the “Win %” is the percentage of games won by player 2; the win percentages were calculated only for those scores that had at least 100 occurrences in the data).

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">Table 1 – Odds of winning for a

In general, the wider the margin between the two players, the greater are the odds that the player who is ahead will win. But this pattern, however, is not perfect. Figure 2 below provides one example. As noted, the closer player 2 is to winning when player 1 has a score of 100, the greater the odds are that player 2 will win the game. But you will note the interesting dip starting when player 2 has a score of 117.

Figure 2: Calculated odds that player 2 wins the game when player 1 has 100 points

The reason for this can be found in the laws of probability. For example, if you flip a true coin, you know the odds are 50 percent that it will come up tails, and 50 percent that it will come up heads. If you flip it ten times, you would expect five heads and five tails. But if you conducted this experiment of ten coin flips a number of times, you would probably find that it was not always split 50 percent between heads and tails. And if you conducted 100 coin flips, the same would be true – you would likely not have exactly 50 heads and 50 tales.

The same is true in the game of cribbage. While you would expect that a wider lead would lead to an increased chance of winning the game, this is not necessarily always true, even over the hundreds of games represented by each of the scores in the table. Another reason for this is that the scores used in my analysis are taken at random points in time, e.g., at the end of the hand, or during the counting of a hand, etc. So who wins the game could be impacted by who has the deal and who is counting when the score in the analysis was used.

Part 2 of this post will explore this phenomenon further. For now, I hope that you enjoy using the table to look up your odds of winning the game as you play cribbage. But remember – these predictions are not perfect, and as they say, your mileage may vary!

Donald E. Welcome to the Spring 2022 Season of Competitive Matchmaking for Cribbage Pro! Where we are, it is definitely that time of year again, and spring has sprung. I know for many there are a few more weeks of winter weather, but here the flowers are blooming, the bees are buzzing and I am sneezing - it is springtime! The Winter 2022 season has completed, and if you had any bets placed on who was going to be at the top, there were not a lot of surprises this time around. Overall, the Top 50 leaderboard still had some new faces, and the season had more matches played than any of the previous 3 seasons! It was a fairly hard and long battle for many to reach their rankings. As always, continue to tell your friends about competitive cribbage, and take advantage of those prizes! Thank you to all who were once again able to participate in this great game of cribbage! For those who couldn't make the commitment to Winter 2022, I hope you can find the time to join in the fun this season.

In 1st place for Winter 2022, we have "iPeg". Welcome back, iPeg! 2nd place is "Dhrun", and I admit I was kind of rooting for Dhrun this season. In 3rd we have "nob4one", which is someone we have seen around these parts before too, and great to see come up from 13th last season. Other interesting movements in the Top 50 included "hillchem" moving from 15th to 7th, and "Yompopo" who came all the way from 41st to 12th! The next biggest moves between seasons were "Br1Guy" who rose 24 places from 37th to 13th, and "RatKing" from 32nd to 14th!

As with past seasons, everyone who finished the season in the Top 50 ("Recent" list), have been awarded both a special in-game "board peg" as well as Cribbage Pro Gold that can be used in the Cribbage Pro Contests system and then redeemed for cash (awards must be used at least once in a Contest to be cashed out to USDC, see the full terms and conditions for details). The Cribbage Pro Gold awards are as follows (not cumulative):

4 Gold for Top 50

7 Gold for Top 25

10 Gold for Top 10

20 Gold for 3rd Place

30 Gold for 2nd Place

50 Gold for 1st Place

Remember to complete your 10 matches per week. See the FAQ for details.

The levels in Competitive Matchmaking are available in the FAQ.

Some Changes This New Spring 2022 Season

Although we had hoped to add several changes this season, we were unable to do so because of competing priorities leaving not enough time to get everything tested and ready to go. So this new season is keeping changes to just a little widening of the difference in CR allowed to make a match in the matchmaking system. Last season had it around 1000 CR, but we tweaked it up a bit to allow for some broader competition. This was needed due to how quickly the lower CR players were bumped out of being able to play (find a match) so early on in the season. We want to be able to welcome players into the season for a longer period of time, and not have people lose all hope early on as the time require to find a match grows beyond the time they have available to play. Again, more changes in the future, but for now that is the noteworthy change for this season aside from some bug fixes, etc.

As a reminder, if you have played a few seasons here and have some thoughts on what you would like to see around prizes, structure or anything else, please email us at support@FullerSystems.com with your suggestions.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com82tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3607768067535353225.post-71980835666801062652021-11-22T14:58:00.001-08:002021-11-22T16:11:50.918-08:00Competitive Cribbage - Winter 2022 Season
Welcome to the Winter 2022 Season of Competitive Matchmaking for Cribbage Pro! Yes, it is still 2021 when we start this season, but I think we have had enough of 2021. The Autumn 2021 season has ended, and in a way that I honestly did not expect. So many new faces on the Top 50 leaderboard this last season, several of which came in at the "last minute" to make their way into the top rankings, and of course a new 1st place player as well! Please continue to tell your friends about competitive cribbage, and of course the chance to win the prizes! Thank you to all who were once again able to participate in this great game of cribbage!

As many will attest, it takes some significant commitment to achieve this, and so I want to very sincerely recognize that hard work here. I'm humbled by the individual effort put in by so many. That said, I also hear that it would be nice to lower that level of work a bit to allow more people a chance to participate. This season we are making some smaller changes, but won't be making the bigger changes until next season when I do plan to include more of your suggestions. Before I get into the more minor changes this season later in this post, let me take a moment to recognize the top players last season.

In 1st place, we have "ThreeG". Great job on achieving this rank and beating out some great competition! 2nd place is "iPeg", and I am sure you are all deeply saddened to see them fall from 1st place, after sitting there multiple seasons. In 3rd we have "Dhrun", which again I know took a lot of work to get there! There were several big improvements again this season, but we really saw a lot of new players in the Top 50, so congratulations to you all as well.

The levels in Competitive Matchmaking are available in the FAQ.

Important Changes This Season

Now to briefly go over some important changes this new season. First, we have changed the rule about how late you can come into the season and start playing. You now must have completed your placement matches 3 weeks prior to the end of the season. This should give enough time to let the ranking settle out the top players without the potential for a few lucky matches to drive rankings sideways at the end of a season.

Second, multiple pieces of the matchmaking system have changed. The biggest change is that we now will enforce a maximum CR difference between players once you get to the Diamond level. That means you shouldn't see someone who is 1000 CR lower/higher than you being matched at that point (and it is fairly unlikely at the lower levels too). The second change is a bit more complex to describe, but put simply it tweaks how the system determines if it thinks the matchup will produce a "good game" and let it through as a positive potential match. I think both of these changes will allow some more movement in the leaderboard in a good way, while also reducing that "risk" of waiting too long and being matched against someone too much lower than you. One of the real life "daily" impacts is that you may wait a little longer for a match, but also that you should not exit out of the matchmaking while waiting like before if you were trying to avoid that lower CR match. It will be fun to see how this all plays out, and note that we may make some tweaks throughout the season if it looks like it any of this isn't achieving the desired outcomes.

One last minor change is a tweak to how wait times are calculated. It is definitely far from perfect, but just remember it is based on what players of your similar level are seeing as wait times on average recently. As such, it will lose accuracy during slower times when fewer players are playing. I am honestly debating if this feature is very helpful, and so please let me know your feedback if you would rather that space on the screen be used for something else or just gone.

Finally, know that we are looking into some potentially bigger changes for the next season. If you have played a few seasons here and have some thoughts on what you would like to see done, please email us at support@FullerSystems.com with your suggestions. Similarly, if you have never played and something is holding you back, let us know. It is primarily what you all suggest that drives what I work on next, so let your voice be heard.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com72tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3607768067535353225.post-43400977626654558082021-09-30T14:46:00.001-07:002021-09-30T14:46:55.616-07:00Older iOS or Android Device Not Connecting to Multiplayer?
Is your older iOS or Android device no longer able to connect to play online multiplayer games, but instead you get a general error about a potential account problem or other connection problem? If you have tried resetting your password and making sure your internet connection is working correctly, but still have problems, you may be experiencing a problem with not having recent security updates (or probably any updates at all recently) on your older device. If you are using an older iOS version older than iOS 10 or Android less than version 7.1.1 (with some exceptions), that older device does not have the latest security updates required to connect securely to the game servers. Without going into a lot of technical details as to why/how this has happened, know that there is this concept of a "root certificate" that your device is missing, but needs to be installed and trusted in order to be able to continue to connect to the game (and many other websites/apps in the future as well most likely). That root certificate is the one used by our website to secure it over HTTPS/SSL (again, skipping over most of the technical parts), and is provided by a company called "LetsEncrypt" (they provide our SSL Certificate). The solution is to add this root certificate to your older device manually. You need to use your device that is having problems to follow these high level steps:

On your device having the problem, go to https://letsencrypt.org/certificates/

Scroll down to the section below the image titled "Root Certificates", and under the "Active" listing the first item is "ISRG Root X1".

Under "ISRG Root X1", to the right of that is the "Self Signed" item linked as "der". Select and download that "der" certificate file.

Open that file on your device and follow any prompts to install it as a root certificate. How you do this exactly will depend on your device. For example, here is how to install a certificate on an Android Pixel device. Other Android devices will require you to go to the Settings app and under a Security section to install the certificate, while most older iOS devices will guide you directly after trying to open the file.

Once installed, you may have to restart your device and then try again to use the game. If simply opening the certificate file you downloaded does not get you started on installing the root certificate, you may have to do a Google search for specific instructions for how to install it on your specific device. It is usually just a few short steps.

Finally, if you try this and still have problems, then this may not be what is causing your issue and you should email us at support@FullerSystems.com for further assistance.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3607768067535353225.post-43877779904308549902021-09-22T13:08:00.006-07:002021-09-22T13:10:55.874-07:00Cribbage Pro Now Available on Windows & Mac!
After many requests, and a fair amount of work, Cribbage Pro is now available on both Windows PC and Mac!

You will find there are some fairly minor visual tweaks in this version of the game as compared to the current mobile version, but every features is there and ready for you to enjoy. There are a few new minor features, like the ability to log out and log back in easily and some new animations for cards when playing. We do hope to add even more in the future as we move to this new system that will eventually be used for all versions of the game, including on mobile devices.

If you use a Windows or Mac computer, please consider supporting the game by installing it and writing a review in the corresponding app store for it. Competitive Cribbage Summer 2021 (Season 5) has ended. It is always great to see players on the Top 50 to end the season that were not in last season. Somehow you all manage to play more and more matches each season, setting a new record for players and matches this last season yet again, so the competition is definitely fierce!

Don't forget to tell your cribbage friends about competitive cribbage, and of course the chance to win the prizes! You have my permission (ok, a request) to brag to your friends about your placement and challenge them to see if they can do any better. In any case, thank you to all who were able to participate in this great game of cribbage.

In 1st place, we have (yes, again) "iPeg". 2nd place is "BigD4Life" (up from 23rd last season) and in 3rd we have "dkatz1877" (up from 9th last season). A close call in 4th is "236Postie", so a special shout out for that run at the top. This season's other honorable mentions go to 5th place player "ernie313" who came up from 30th last season, "Br1Guy" who was 21st last season and now 8th, and "DertyFerd" in 10th rising from 44th. I believe those improvements certainly represent some real hard work to get there. There were a lot of other big improvements again this season, including several new to the Top 50, so congratulations to you all as well.

I do have some potential inside information that may indicate iPeg could be taking a breather this new season. If you were sitting out and waiting for your chance to make a run at it, this may be your chance, or I suppose iPeg reads this and decides to not sit out! Should be a fun and exciting season either way. With that said, iPeg's accumulated Gold so far should make for a fun opponent in the Cribbage Contests system if you are looking for a way to make some extra cash. Maybe send iPeg a friend invite/challenge to put those winnings to good use! (sorry iPeg, you are about to get spammed with friend requests - the price of fame and fortune).

The Cribbage Pro Gold awards are as follows (not cumulative):

4 Gold for Top 50

7 Gold for Top 25

10 Gold for Top 10

20 Gold for 3rd Place

30 Gold for 2nd Place

50 Gold for 1st Place

Remember to complete your 10 matches per week. See the FAQ for details. Competitive Cribbage Spring 2021 has ended, and there was a lot of movement in the Top 50 this season. It looks like we had a lot of people using new strategies and everyone playing more often, with the most matches played in any season so far! At the same time, this season we have a lot of new faces in the Top 50 compared to last season. Don't forget to tell your cribbage friends about our competitive cribbage, and of course the chance to win the prizes, while seeing who the top players are!

As always, a sincere thank you to everyone who participated. You are the ones that make this so much fun to both play and spectate. A particular congratulations to the top finishers! In 1st place, we have "iPeg" (up from 6th last season). 2nd place is "cyrusg" (up from 100th last season, and pulled ahead at the end) and in 3rd we have "KenC456" (down from 2nd last season). Also, a few quick honorable mentions. First to our 4th place player "enaud58" who was also not in the Top 50 last season (up from 190th), then "VGKnights" who came up 6 places from last season to land in 5th, "lbolt58" who finished 6th and improved by 3, "flashmatt" finishing 7th while at 68th last season, and "Yompopo" improving 12 positions to finish 8th (just edging out "dkatz1877"). Many others had some significant improvements, so I could go on for a while (ok, one more, "Looie3nba" improving 15 positions to finish 13th), but see the full list below for the final Top 50 standings for last season.

Although spring here in the northern hemisphere doesn't officially start for a few more weeks, I think many have had enough of winter this year. Competitive Season 3 has ended, and the involvement of everyone once again exceeded our expectations. I keep saying this, but it is really a lot of fun to watch everyone compete for the top placements and I hope you all feel the same way. Spread the word to your friends about this competitive cribbage format, and get them to join in the fun to see who is really the top player! Once again, this season grew and there were more matches played this season than before, and even more players who participated. We also had the most Grand-Master finishers in any season so far, so maybe we will have to add a new tier in the future.

A big thank you to everyone who participated, and a special congratulations to the top finishers! In 1st place, we have "ThreeG" (up from 16th in last season). 2nd place is "KenC456" (new this season) and in 3rd we have "TC2" which is someone who is becoming a regular top 10 finisher! As our regular reminder to keep improving and fight your way to the top, we recommend reading through the cribbage strategy tips and the many related blog posts to sharpen up, and if you're serious about improving there are tons of great strategy books out there that you should really consider.

It was a blast to watch the competitive Season 2 evolve and grow. We saw roughly the same number of players, but thousands more matches played! We also saw many more new players involved, with many new names in the Leaderboard. Overall, the Competitive Matchmaking System saw about 40% more activity every day. What this means is that everyone who participated really worked very hard to earn that final ranking! I'm sure the global pandemic has been a part of how active the community has been in playing, but I do hope that you all have found this a fun season to participate in, and at the very least a helpful distraction during this time.

A big thank you to everyone who participated, and of course a hearty congratulations to our top finishers. In 1st place, we have "iPeg" (up from 5th place in last season). 2nd place is "TC2" (up from 6th) and in 3rd we find "dkatz1877" who is new to the Competitive Matchmaking Leaderboard this season, although active for many years in the game. If you were someone who didn't place this season, keep trying and I'm sure you will find your winning streak! Of course, we always recommend reading through the cribbage strategy tips and the many related blog posts to sharpen up.

I asked "iPeg" (aka Kelly Holt from Wisconsin, USA) to share some perspective on the great game of cribbage. If you want to earn a top spot yourself, it would be hard to disagree with this advice:

"People who are smarter and more eloquent than I have written entire books on detailed cribbage strategies, so I won’t begin to try to cover many of them, but I have a few guidelines that have helped me to win more often. One is to always discard and play your hand based upon statistics, and not hunches. Another is to play the best players, from which you will learn the most. A third is to self-critique your own play, and never stop learning and adjusting. After playing for over twenty five years, I’ve changed the way I lead from certain hands in just the last year or two. And finally, read those cribbage books!"

As with last season, everyone who finished the season in the Top 50 ("Recent" list, not "All Time"), have been awarded both a special in-game "board peg" as well as Cribbage Pro Gold that can be used in the Cribbage Pro Contests system and then redeemed for cold hard cash (awards must be used at least once in a Contest to be cashed out to USDC, see the full terms and conditions for details). The top finisher, iPeg, is awarded the "crown" board peg, and all others in the Top 50 are awarded a "star" board peg. These pegs are shown to everyone when playing in online multiplayer games, so if you see your opponent has one of them you can know that they have earned it by finishing in the Top 50 in competitive play. We have been pretty happy with the participation, competitive spirit and overall results of how the system performed in Season 2, and in some areas where we are debating making some changes we felt it was best to not do so over the coming holiday time. As always, email us your questions, feedback and suggestions or leave a comment here if you are looking for some community feedback on it (please don't use the comments area for account questions or other issues). Here we are in Season 2 of Competitive Matchmaking, and it still feels like the first season started yesterday. Before I jump into some changes/tweaks in Season 2, I want to take a moment to congratulate the top players of the first season, and of course go over what they won for their prize. Congratulations to everyone who made it into the Top 50 Leaderboard for Competitive Matchmaking! A particular congratulations to the top 3 players, kb92129, PegSurfer and our top finisher Nytric456!! Each of the top 3 also reached the final CR Level of Grand-Master! I know many have worked very hard to get to where they placed, so congratulations to everyone no matter where you ended the season for such a great competitive season. If you didn't make the Top 50 this time, now is your chance to start fresh and go for the gold!

Speaking of "gold", everyone who finished the season in the Top 50 ("Recent" list, not "All Time"), were awarded both a special in-game "board peg" as well as Cribbage Pro Gold that can be used in the Cribbage Pro Contests system and then redeemed for cold hard cash (awards must be used at least once in a Contest to be cashed out to USDC, see the full terms and conditions for details). The top finisher, Nytric456, is awarded the "crown" board peg, and all others in the Top 50 are awarded a "star" board peg. These pegs are shown to everyone when playing in online multiplayer games, so if you see your opponent has one of them you can know that they have earned it by finishing in the Top 50 in competitive play. The Cribbage Pro Gold awards are as follows (not cumulative):

2 Gold for Top 50

4 Gold for Top 25

10 Gold for Top 10

20 Gold for 3rd Place

30 Gold for 2nd Place

50 Gold for 1st Place

The first season included many thousands of players competing from all over the world, and the number of players grew every single day up until the very end. Season 2 is certainly going to be even more competitive than before, so hang in there and work hard to improve your game - and of course, have fun! With that said, here are some important changes in Season 2:

This new season will be a little shorter, at 90 days

All competitive players must play a minimum of 10 games per week to avoid a reduction in ranking. This is not really a "penalty", but it is a reduction in the systems confidence level of your rank if you don't play enough to calculate a rank accurately. The more time that you do not play, the less we know about how well you would perform relative to those who are playing. This 10 game minimum is likely a commitment that not everyone can make. However, this is "the big time" intended for the serious cribbage player, and the system simply has to have enough game play information to get rankings as accurate as possible. If you play just a few games per day, you will have over 10 in a week very quickly. I strongly recommend not waiting until the last day.

Starting in Season 2, we have "tweaked" the formula used in calculating the ranking change you earn when you win or lose a match (what you will see as your CR going up or down). These changes were done to try and more accurately represent the nature of the game of cribbage, and the inevitable "ups and downs" players can go through, so that the ranking can be a bit more fluid (although, probably just slightly more). These were not big changes, just some "tuning" that we think will help. I expect we will continue tuning this system for multiple seasons to come as we see how each change performs in the real world.

Those are the biggest changes coming in Season 2. We never want to change too many things all at one time, as doing so would make it hard to know what changes were having what results in the game, but if you have other suggestions that you have not shared with us yet, please do let us know.

I hope you all enjoy Season 2 of Competitive Matchmaking in Cribbage Pro!

UPDATE 2:

The Leaderboard for Competitive Matchmaking will now show win/loss/totals for the current season only. You can view the lifetime totals in the individual stats for each player.

UPDATE 1:

Here is what the score box area and pegs awarded look like for those who were awarded them:

Also as requested, here was the final Top 50 for Season 1:

We are pleased to announce that effective immediately, Cribbage Contests (games played for real cash prizes) will now award the winner 97% of all entry fees collected (previously 85%)!

We have recently made several changes to our Contests system to help streamline it and make it more efficient. These changes significantly lower our cost to run and maintain the system, and so we are passing that directly to you. You will not find any online cribbage contest system anywhere that can give you a higher cash prize amount. If you have been thinking about trying out the Cribbage Pro Contest system, now is a great time to start!

After a lot of hard work, and great support and feedback from the community of Cribbage Pro players during "beta testing", we are excited to announce the full release of Online Multiplayer Competitive Matchmaking in Cribbage Pro!

The game of cribbage has often faced challenges in calculating player skill levels in both real world physical games and online digital versions. Accurately ranking players by their skill is a challenge in any game that involves a degree of chance/luck. We have tried many different ways of doing this in the past, and through that experience we have learned a lot. With that history as a teacher, and algorithms now available that have improved dramatically since we started, we are happy to announce our new Competitive Rank - CR (or "Cribbage Rank" if you prefer) ranking system.

Here are the new basic elements of Competitive Matchmaking:

Best-Of-3

Automatic Counting

10 Sec. Turn Limit

No Chat

Start Automatically

Disconnect/Quit is Always a Loss

Classic (non-competitive) XP Level of 5+ Required

5 Placement Matches Required for Ranking

We chose these criteria to make competitive matchmaking the best it can be. First, it is a matchmaking system so that it avoids players selecting only newer players to try and easily win points against, while also providing fun and challenging games. We went with a "Best-of-3" series as a good way to remove some of the chance/luck from the game (alternating dealer as expected). There are also other things our algorithm does internally to help offset the chance/luck factor. Automatic Counting was chosen because, although counting and math is certainly a skill, the skill we want to measure here is playing cribbage. We have found that although new players may miss points from time to time, a skilled player will win against an unskilled player in a best of 3 series no matter if manual counting and muggins is enabled or not. The automatic counting option enables us to set a shorter time limit of 10 seconds, which makes a best of three games series more practical. The shorter time limit helps move the game along so that the entire match can still complete in a reasonable time frame. We removed the chat for the same reason - to keep it fast and competitive without unnecessary distractions.

This new Competitive Matchmaking is also a "Season" based system. We will be having "Competitive Seasons", just like you would see in a professional sports season. This means that on a regular basis (currently about 3 months; Quarterly), a new season will start and give everyone a chance to come in and participate on equal footing to see if they can take the title of the best player of the season! We are also planning on awarding a special prize to the top finishers of the season! The specifics of that prize will be shared at a later time and may be unique for each season. You must play games every week of the season (2 per week minimum), or you will see a reduction in your CR as a result. This happens because of an increase in our uncertainty of your actual skill if you don't keep playing regularly against other players. Stale players will not be able to sit at the top. Make certain you are regularly playing competitive matches to hold on to your CR.

When you complete your placement matches, you will be given a CR value, and a corresponding named CR Level. The levels are simply a breakdown of the CR value like this:

Bronze - 1 - 1499 CR

The system that is used to calculate your CR, and to adjust it when you win or lose (and as part of the matchmaking itself), is similar to the "Elo Rating System" but a bit more complex like a derivative of that called the "Glicko Rating System" (to clarify, it is NOT just the Glicko system). We have taken the ideas of those systems, and others that are derived from them in modern games/sports, and created our own customized system for cribbage games. Instead of repeating what you can read in each of those links to those systems, just know that we have a system that is very much like them that includes a "confidence factor" (or sometimes called an "uncertainty factor") and a few other adjustments specific to what we felt was needed after running various simulations/tests of the system. We will almost certainly make further tweaks and adjustments to those things as we review how the system is working from time to time.

There are some questions that are common with a system like this, so I'll clarify a few of them here. First, you will see situations where someone's win percentage may be lower than you (and/or have fewer games played than you), and yet they are ranked higher. This is because a skill ranking system like this is significantly concerned with the skill of the opponent you are facing when determining how many points you win or lose from each match you play. Someone who has faced many highly skilled players, and won, will not have to play as many games to move up. Similarly, if they are relatively lower skilled and play higher skilled, they will lose very little when they lose games. This system can then account for people who play a lot of games, versus someone playing fewer total. As long as you are playing games every week, that is enough for the system to calculate your skill with a high enough degree of confidence (just don't miss too many days). You will also notice that in your stats there will not be any "skunk" related stats for competitive matchmaking games, as currently all "best of 3+" series style games have no concept of a skunk in them. You always win or lose by the same minimum games in a series based system like this, for instance a best-of-3 is always won by whoever wins 2 games, a best-of-5 by whoever wins 3, etc. You can never win a a best-of-3 series by more than 2 games, or less than 2 games, so as such there is no way to "skunk" someone in a series.

Lastly, a disconnect or forfeit in a competitive game, of any kind, will count as a full loss in every respect. There is no mercy here in competitive play. Consider this like a professional sports league, and there will be no exceptions beyond the rare case where we can accurately determine that there was a bug of some kind in our system that caused the disconnect/forfeit (which you must fully report to us for investigation). To be clear, this does NOT mean that you will avoid a loss if you try to show it was your internet connection failing - that will still be a loss as there would be too many ways to cheat the system otherwise. We will determine independently if it was our code itself that caused the problem, and only then will a loss be reversed if needed.

This new Competitive Rank system continues to extend our goal of making Cribbage Pro the best option for serious cribbage players. We hope you all enjoy this new mode of play as much as we have during our testing of it. You should find the matches to be against similarly skilled players, so that the matches are both challenging and fun! As always, if you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know through email to support@FullerSystems.com

To join the beta, [UPDATE: BETA IS NOW CLOSED]

This is the much anticipated change for online multiplayer that introduces a new points/ranking system for this new game mode as well, so it also includes a new "Top 50" Leaderboard for competitive matchmaking. You will still have all of your points from the "old" multiplayer points system (and that system continues unchanged here), those points are just now called "XP" (basically, experience points). Similarly, your old level in multiplayer will now be called your "XP Level". The name for these games is now called "Classic", to show the difference between that and the new game mode called "Competitive Matchmaking". We have also removed the "Lobby Chat" tab, as frankly it was rarely used and taking up valuable space.

In competitive mode games, you will now see your Competitive Rank (CR) and the corresponding level for that (CR Level). Before you can rank in competitive play, you have to be at least an XP Level of 5, and then play at least 5 competitive matchmaking games (placement matches) to earn your rank. Once completed, you will be awarded a rank and level based on your performance in those placement matches against others of similar CR/CR Level.

Some of this may change as we go through the beta, but right now here are the basic rules of Competitive Matchmaking.

All Competitive Games Are:

Best-Of-3

A single game is just not enough of a sample to determine your skill versus your opponent

Automatic Counting

Your skill with selecting discards and playing your cards is what we care about

10 Sec. Turn Limit

Shorter than anything possible through the classic games, so think fast

Start Automatically

Nobody is responsible for "starting" the game, all automatic

Disconnect/Quit is Always a Loss

Don't try to get away with quitting, dropping your connection, etc. It won't work, and you will lose as a result

Classic XP Level of 5+ Required

You have to play in the classic mode for a little while to familiarize yourself with the game before you jump into competitive play

Finally, we will be having "competitive seasons" with this as well, just like you would see in a professional sports season. This means that on a regular basis (actual timing TBD), a new season will start and give everyone a chance to come in and participate on equal footing to see if they can take the title of the best player of the season!

We are very excited to get this release out to you for beta testing, and really want your feedback and suggestions if you try it out. We do need enough players to join the beta so that we have enough players to regular do the matchmaking with as well, so if you join please also encourage your friends to join and give it a try too. We plan on running the beta for a little while to gather as much feedback as possible, before we release this out to everyone in the general release.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com52tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3607768067535353225.post-15827154190316736862019-10-07T11:37:00.000-07:002019-10-11T14:30:38.981-07:00Multiplayer Points System 2019 Revisions

Beginning on October the 8th, 2019, there are some necessary and exciting changes coming to the Cribbage Pro Multiplayer Points System. Previously, you would lose points based on how much you lost a game by. There was also only a relatively minor penalty if you were to quit or disconnect, which made it possible to quit and lose fewer points in some circumstances. That loophole has now been fixed!

The biggest benefit to everyone from these changes is that now when you lose a game, you will not lose any points! However, if you quit, forfeit or disconnect for any reason before the game is over, you will lose points. If a player disconnects (not a forfeit, but loss of connection), there will also be a five minute wait time before you can create or join a game.

These changes have been made for many reasons, the primary being keeping play “fair” and encouraging those who have been playing for a long time, but have had minimal “leveling up”. A loss will still be recorded in the statistics for play, but won’t be a point loss on your Top 50 Leaderboard standings.

The loophole of disconnecting has been unfair, and we are excited to have improved the fairness of the game for everyone through these changes. Technology is generally good enough now to keep a connection, but as always, be sure you have a solid connection before a game is started.

Thanks to everyone for their great suggestions which we have used here to implement these changes. Keep the suggestions coming and best of luck in all your cribbage games!

UPDATE: Thanks to those who have contacted us with your suggestions for improving the system. Please know that we are actively working on developing and testing a new true ranking system that we hope will work alongside the existing points/level system. Stay tuned!
