Season 5 of Competitive Cribbage

Welcome to the Summer 2021 Season of Competitive Matchmaking for Cribbage Pro! Competitive Cribbage Spring 2021 has ended, and there was a lot of movement in the Top 50 this season. It looks like we had a lot of people using new strategies and everyone playing more often, with the most matches played in any season so far! At the same time, this season we have a lot of new faces in the Top 50 compared to last season. Don't forget to tell your cribbage friends about our competitive cribbage, and of course the chance to win the prizes, while seeing who the top players are!

As always, a sincere thank you to everyone who participated. You are the ones that make this so much fun to both play and spectate. A particular congratulations to the top finishers! In 1st place, we have "iPeg" (up from 6th last season). 2nd place is "cyrusg" (up from 100th last season, and pulled ahead at the end) and in 3rd we have "KenC456" (down from 2nd last season). Also, a few quick honorable mentions. First to our 4th place player "enaud58" who was also not in the Top 50 last season (up from 190th), then "VGKnights" who came up 6 places from last season to land in 5th, "lbolt58" who finished 6th and improved by 3, "flashmatt" finishing 7th while at 68th last season, and "Yompopo" improving 12 positions to finish 8th (just edging out "dkatz1877"). Many others had some significant improvements, so I could go on for a while (ok, one more, "Looie3nba" improving 15 positions to finish 13th), but see the full list below for the final Top 50 standings for last season.

As with past seasons, everyone who finished the season in the Top 50 ("Recent" list), have been awarded both a special in-game "board peg" as well as Cribbage Pro Gold that can be used in the Cribbage Pro Contests system and then redeemed for cash (awards must be used at least once in a Contest to be cashed out to USDC, see the full terms and conditions for details). The top finisher is awarded the "crown" board peg, and all others in the Top 50 are awarded a "star" board peg. These pegs are shown to everyone when playing in online multiplayer games, and they are permanent, so if you see your opponent has one of them you can know that they have earned it by finishing in the Top 50 in competitive play. We have increased the Cribbage Pro Gold awards for the lower ranks this time around, and so the new values are as follows (not cumulative):

  • 4 Gold for Top 50 (double last season!)
  • 7 Gold for Top 25 (+3 from last season)
  • 10 Gold for Top 10
  • 20 Gold for 3rd Place
  • 30 Gold for 2nd Place
  • 50 Gold for 1st Place
Remember to complete your 10 matches per week. See the FAQ for details. Play early, and play often!

  1. Thanks for the league. My first time completing a season. Enjoyed the games but not sure if I'll do it again. Best of 3 game matches takes a lot of time. I'd definitely be in if you tried a best of one. I think you'd get a lot more players and we'd see more competition. Multiple game matches means fewer matches and it's too difficult to go for the top spot. iPeg was at the top of the leader board most of the season and with his rating lead no one could challenge him.

    1. Hi, Uber Pooch, nice finish at 12! I was fortunate to have a 16 match winning streak to propel me near the top early and was able to win around 62 percent of my matches to stay on top. The format is very demanding, high ranked players must avoid losses to much lower ranked players, if possible. I think 2/3 is a good format, amplifying the skill factor slightly over single games. Looking forward to seeing you on the leaderboard in season 5!

    2. I think best of three is fair. Would like to see muggins added in too. That would be a real challenge, and would most likely show the best players.

    3. In Classic competitive I'd bet the best of one game matches is the overwhelming favorite for players. If that's the case then offering this format would make sense for the ladder league. You get a lot more matches and a lot more players. The best of three game matches yields a lot less in both areas which is counterintuitive.

  5. Why is it that whoever cuts first almost always gets the lowest card and ends up dealing first? And everyone seems to understand that because the top players always rush to cut first. That doesn’t feel random to me.

We review stats like cut cards as part of the audits done, and so I'll try to find the time to publish the next audit and include some cut card statistics for you.

  6. I'm trying to play the initial five games two opponents have already disconnected and I have not received credit for the victory seems any opponent can disconnect when they are losing in order to avoid giving their opponent the victory

    1. Again this only relates relates to the first five games which are used for establishing an initial rating

      Delete
    2. This is discussed in the Season 4 comments (search for placement). Per Fuller, you are getting credit for the win but, you are correct, that the counter of 'First 5' games does not change (and that, per Fuller, is needed to prevent a method of cheating).

    3. dph is correct. We prevent them from counting right now due to some special scenarios that would otherwise cause problems. We are working on some ideas to allow that to work differently in the future. Know that someone who disconnects and is thinking they are in some way "cheating" or getting away with anything, is very much wrong. The system is very aware of that and assesses the appropriate penalties.

  7. Hello,
My opponent just quit on me when I was going to win. I did not get credit for the win and still shows 2 out 5 for placement and it should be 3 out 5 now. I am 3-0.

    Thanks,
    Matt

  8. Wondering why it is so much more difficult to find competitive match...... timer will say 8 sec to find match and still no match by 20 sec?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Timer to find matches is pretty useless and unreliable. Also, the longer you wait the greater the chance you'll get paired up against a significantly lower rated player. I've been matched up against players with a CR more than 1,000 lower than me. Pretty stupid.

  9. Thank you to those who pointed out flaw in game re quitting in first 5 games. It works like a charm and so many players use it and now i do too. Now this game is crazy fun.

    1. Your assertion that by quitting during the placement matches is somehow an advantage is simply false. The system will absolutely penalize you for each and every one, and even though you don't see the impact to your CR during those matches you quit, it is absolutely impacting it negatively. We track these things pretty closely and I can't imagine why we would design a system with such an obvious flaw like that.

    4. It is so rigged. I stay now that i figured out how to cheat like you sawyer. Won 4 of 5 in qualifier by quitting if i was losing. Got high ranking and guess what... getting great cards in first match! I’m now a great player and loving this rigged game.

Now that I gamed the qualifying round, my hands are now much more like they are in the non-tourney competition. It’s night and day. Try telling the truth about initial ranking and the cards you get afterward. And bcze it’s so well understood, I’m running into opponents who regularly quit when losing. You are a liar and game is rigged.

    2. Your assertion that we somehow stack the deck in favor of higher ranked players is ridiculous and demonstrably false. As others have suggested, if you seriously believe we created such a game that cheats like that, I would encourage you to find somewhere else to play.

    3. If as you say it's rigged in favour of the higher ranked players consider this. This season after my initial 5 games I was ranked in the 5th percentile.not even half way through the season I am now in the 92nd percentile so not sure if your lacking talent/skill but that you one thing is for certain you is full of shit.

  13. Are you just pretending to be dumb? My experience is that your initial ranking has everything to do with the cards your dealt thru the 88 days. So best to be a weasel and quit qualifying games you aren’t going to win. If you think you can play above .500 after a lousy initial ranking, you’ve answered my question above.

    1. Me to know how, We played earlier this evening, a game you could have won with better play. For example, you were non-dealer, kept Q-Q-J-5, I kept 6-7-8-A. Play went Q-8-J-A, and I received a go. If you led the 5 next, instead of the Q, you would have avoided giving me the 5-6-7 run at the end. Later in the game I was able to go out because of those extra pag points. Strategy matters.

  16. I’m done with this app. I know that Fuller Systems insist that it’s random dealing, but something’s not quite right. No matter how good a player I am, there’s no way I should win 13 matches in a row (which I’ve done twice now, and had many more slightly lesser streaks. This was all against players rated around 4200. And if I were that good, then similarly I shouldn’t then lose 13 out of 14 matches (or similar) which has also happened on several occasions. Then there’s the matches where I’ve been consistently dealt 16, 24, 16, 12, 24 etc. Whilst my opponent has had 0, 2, 0, 4 etc. Not much fun in that, especially when it’s the other way round! I’ve played crib for many years and have never experienced anything consistently like this with a real deck. Of course you’re going to get runs of luck, good and bad, but not as prolonged as it is with this app. It’s meant to be enjoyable but I’m just finding it frustrating.
    All the best

    1. Hi Pete, it is a game and intended to be entertaining and fun. So if that isn't happening for you, I understand. Still, as we have shown extensively, the game is fair and honest in every respect and it is absolutely using a random shuffle and never stacking the deck or anything else like that. That doesn't mean that it is "like real life", it just means it is truly random.

      Delete
    2. To illustrate how winning and losing streaks can happen in cribbage, I used excel to create a string of 1000 random numbers between 0 and 1. Then I added different factors; 0.4, 0.48, 0.5, and 0.6 to represent different “skill levels.” The results were converted to either a 0 or 1 to represent a win or loss. Then the number of wins were counted for each “skill level. Also, the number of consecutive 0’s or 1’s were counted for each skill level to look at winning and losing streaks. These are the results: The .4 skill level had 411 wins out of 1000, with a longest winning streak of 11 games and a longest losing streak of 11 games. The .48 level had 502 wins, with a longest winning streak of 13 games and a longest losing streak of 11 games. The .50 level had 530 wins, with a longest winning streak of 15 games and a longest losing streak of 10 games. The .60 level had 618 wins, with a longest losing streak of 7 games and a longest winning streak of 16 games. This experiment demonstrates that streaks do happen for all skill levels, and the length of the winning or losing streak depends upon the skill level of the player. My longest winning streak is 16 matches, after playing a total of 2729 matches. This is pretty consistent with the experimental results, in my opinion. In live play, I have also experienced similar results, winning 10 or more games in a row, and losing almost as much, with a smaller sample size. Bottom line is that streaks happen in cribbage.

    3. Great methodology ipeg. To whit i routinely (for better or worse) run off streaks both winning or losing of more than 5 games yet every season emd up winning around 58.5% of my games. Got to get to 60 to catch you

  19. Please tell me again what is competitive about a match between a player with 2000 points and a player with 4063?
I would NEVER pick a player that much lower than me to play

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In short, the CR is just the output from a formula that represents several different factors. The system is designed to not just find competitive (in the challenging sense of the word) games, but also to try to accurately rank players by skill. To do that, newer players must be given a chance to play higher level players while higher level players must periodically play lower levels as well. One of the reasons that the system selects the match is precisely because it will make matches that you wouldn't necessarily choose independently. That said, I would never claim it to be a "perfect" system, and we regularly review the results and will make tweaks as needed.

      Delete
  20. I know that you've had a lot of complaints of people facing opponents that are significantly lower rated than themselves. This is actually a valid concern. From experience, facing lower rated opponents have had the biggest negative affect on my CR ranking.

I take meticulous records against my opponents. During seasons 3 and 4, my record against 4000+ players was 134-77, while against 3500-3999 players it was 120-60, and finally against 3000-3499 rated players it was 26-14. From experience, to maintain a 4300+ rating, you have to score 3-2 (60%) against 4000+ rated players, while against 3500-3999 players you have to score slightly higher than 3-1 (75%), and against 3000-3499 rated players you have to maintain a record of 8-1. Playing 4000+ players have had the biggest positive effect on my ranking. It is a lot easier to score 60% against 4000+ players than 75%+ against lower rated players. As such, if someone were to face a high percentage of lower rated players, it would be unfair.

I remember reading the season 1 info and saying that you have this system to prevent people from getting "easy" points against weak opponents. However, this appears to have been overdone. These points are far from easy.

I know it's hard to maintain a fair rating system. However, I'm sure that there are ways to make it more accurate and fair. For example, you can implement a system where you cannot face a significantly lower rated opponent by a certain percentage (for example, you cannot face opponents 500 points lower than you on more than 10% of your matches).

    4. To determine approximately how many players are in the tournament your ranking by 1 minus your percentile/100. For example, if your rank is 60 and your percentile is 92, the number of players is 60/(1-0.92)=60/0.08= 750 players.
